Casa de Campo ~ Shuttle

Recommended Posts

We weren't on RC when we went there but if it is the same place I am thinking of .... we went on the free shuttle and the village was not too great... in fact... people on the bus were complaining about why this was even a port. I don't mean to sound negative but if you don't get a free shuttle, I am not sure if I would pay to visit the shopping village.

I was recently there on a Costa cruise. There were 2 shuttles, one to downtown La Romana and one to Altos de Chavon. We opted to go downtown, and were advised exactly where to go and warned not to stray. Knee high kids begging, teens hawking CDs and grown-ups doing the hard sell (the Cozumel guys could take some lessons here). The best part of this port was watching the kids playing sanctioned baseball games from the top deck of the ship (it was like being in a cheap bleecher seat). There is nothing within walking distance of the ship, and it did not look like there was anything being developed.

MotherHen, Yes, I have lots of pics of Altos de Chavon. Our older married kids went there and have a lot of photos. It's beautiful and it's also an artist's colony with art galleries. Parts of the movie Apocolypse Now was filmed there.

Tim...Thanx...glad there's a shuttle!!!!

Hi SeaCruise: are these pictures of Dom. Rep. they are really nice. Is there shopping in that villiage? So much for the shuttle huh?

P.S. I forgot to answer your question in my last post....

I THINK she said there was SOME shopping but only things made by locals. I'll ask her and find out for sure.

I may have missed it, but I don't think I saw an answer to the original question. Does ROYAL CARIBBEAN opperate a free shuttle to the village? Is there one available to RCCL cruisers to take us to Altos de Chavon? Is it free? How often do they run? Thanks!!

Thank you for bumping this up to the top of the boards again by posting! I was afraid I'd have to keep adding pictures just to keep my original question in view!

PLEASE....any help out there regarding an RCCL shuttle:confused:

The pictures you have are beautiful. I can't remember for sure if this was the same place I went to. I think so but I may ask my hubby to look to see if he remembers. As I mentioned before, I don't think the shopping was good but I do remember it being a nice village. Maybe it had just opened, that's why.

I wish I could help you about the shuttle. I am thinking we visited there while on Celebrity which is owed by RC(I know a stretch) so there could be a possibility that they would offer a shuttle.

At least this will bump up your post.

FWIW, on the Costa cruise I referenced above, I do not believe the shuttle was sanctioned by the cruise ship. At least there was no mention of it in the cruise docs. I'm guessing it is there for all cruises. There was a nominal charge... seems like maybe $7 each to go downtown and $12 to go to the village.

I also went on Celebrity and used the shuttles. I think that the shuttles were provided by the port, not the cruise ship. There was a Costa ship in port as well and we were sharing the shuttles.

The "artist's village" is a disney-style faux 15th century village. DW and I weren't real impressed. It was ok to wander around for half an hour, but that's it. On the way back, I noticed that the cruise ship area is guarded by men that looked like soldiers who carried automatic rifles. I don't think I'd venture outside the sanctioned area. I think this is the only port that I've been to that made me nervous.

The night after we stopped there, the dinner show was a comedian. His opening line was something like "today you learned that Casa de Campo is Spanish for Cruise Ship Port for Crap-o." Everyone laughed really hard....

Does anyone know if there are a lot of steep inclines in this village. My mother has breathing difficulty and I'm wondering if we should rent a wheelchair to make things easier.

Donna:o

We were in Casa de Campo in Feb where we had to meet the buese there was a very long hill to walk up.

The only reason we even got off of the boat was because we had a shore excursion planned we went to Santo Domingo. This is an extremely poor country & we felt not one for you to going walking around. While we were on tour in Santo Domingo they had a police officer escort our group throughout out our tour.

Hi sea-cruise!

Wow, you've got gorgeous pictures there!! :) We'll be in Casa de Campo in a couple of weeks and I still have no idea what we'll do at that port!

I do know that RCI offers an excursion to Altos de Chavon, so I doubt that the cruise line would also offer a free shuttle.

I just spoke to a man that my DH works with and he said that he and his wife stayed at an all-inclusive right near there for a week last year, and they actually LIKED the area. He said the village (altos de chavon) was very nice and said it felt like they were in Italy. LOL He also said they spent a day at the local village (regular town area) and he said that they ate in town and the chicken they were served was walking around them and just scooped up, killed, and then cooked, right in front of them! lol He thought it was great and was not at all bothered by this because they like to see how the locals live whenever they travel. But he warned me about it because he realizes that this could turn some people off. lol

Anyway, thanks again for the pictures. :)
