Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has done the tubing the ditch excursion in Kauai? I was wanting to know if it is very claustrophobic? I hate small spaces but huge caves and things don't both me as long as I don't have to squueze through anything small!

Yep I was. We were booked to go on Journey to Waimea Canyon however I've been before and if my partner isn't too fussed about it then the tubing looks like fun! Just not sure re claustrophobia factor, don't want to go and then disrupt the group when I freak out!

Glad you asked the cluastrophobic question, because I'm wondering the same thing. We are booked for this excursion. My husband booked it for us & then I read about it later. I'm too hopeing I don't have to "squeeze" thru a space. Anxious to see someone's answers.

Thanks so much for the utube link. Those were great to watch. Watching them, I don't think being claustrophobic would be that big of deal. Looks like you can always see a light at the end of the tunnel. And nothng to squeeze thru.

Thanks again.

My pleasure. I am a little chapped that they won't let little ones on the tubing excursion (we have a 2 and 3 year old with us). I think they would just love it!

I even e-mailed the backcountry people and asked if they could make an exception. But they said no...

Bummer... I think we are still going to go on it and have my mom watch the kids...

Cheers!

I went tubing the ditch in Kauai last year and thought it was great fun....definately potential to hurt yourself if you don't follow directions (don't try to push off the walls, just ride your 'tube' with your legs tucked up a bit!)

I ended up with a bump on my arm where I whacked a rock trying to keep my orientation in the cave (you spin a bit) , but it wasn't necessary and if I do it again, I'll make sure to just tuck up and ride through the caves.

Recommended & worth the cost, even in dreary weather.

We went on the tubing the ditch and one thing I would watch out for is the rash you can get on your upper arms where they lay on the tube and are moving back and forth as you paddle with your hands.

You are constantly moving them on the rubber as you move your tube. I would do it again in a heartbeat - great fun - but would DEFINITELY wear a long-sleeved top or even cut off the sleeves from an old shirt and wear them on this excursion.

I noticed that the two guides we had both had on long sleeves. The guides acknowledged that you can get a rash but that it goes away in a few days. It did, but who wants a rash on your upper arms.

As I said, that wouldn't keep us from doing it over again but WITH my arms covered.

Kathy
