They have a boat called Fast Ferry (Chilkat Cruises & Tours) They operate upto 28 crossings each day and take about 35 minutes. They offer a variety of tours also They have a website at www.chilkatcruises.com of you can phone them toll free at 888-766-2103.

I reguested info from Skagway.org and they sent me this packet as well. It's seems very nice and reasonable.

Hope this helps.

The ferry is as stated. they run that number of ferries only at the very peak season. Shoulder season won't find nearly as often. Yes certainly you can make a train trip- if you have a long day in port. You would have to consider the about noon train as you probably won't make the first one.

Our ship docked in Skagway last summer and we took the fast ferry over to Haines. We liked it so much better than Skagway. It's not as touristy. We went kayaking at Chilkoot Lake with Eco Orca.

We had time to eat lunch at the Bamboo Room (great Dungeness crab) before catching the ferry back. The scenery from the ferry was wonderful. We even saw whales. The captain had to cut the engine one time because a whale came up so close.

We had time to wander through Skagway after returning. If you want to do the train, I guess you'll be going the opposite way.

You'll definitely want to take the Ferry. Driving there is 300 miles. As we past Haines leaving Skagway, the CD said that you have to go up one highway, go north, then south and all over the place to get to Haines.

Also be sure to do either the Ferry or the Train early (like first thing) so you won't miss out on the other. We left Skagway at 5:30 and the last train was at 3 or 3:30.
