Suits on formal nights

Sweetest Sin

Recommended Posts

Ugh, after all the mud-slinging in another thread about appropriate dress, I almost hate to ask, but I really want to know.

I've seen some posters mention tuxes or dark suits on formal nights. Why not a light colored suit? Especially in the Caribbean, wouldn't that be okay? My husband's suit is a light grey color, and since he is in the army he does not need another suit. Would that be okay?

I don't see anything wrong with a light suit. Not everyone wears tuxedo's in fact I haven't seen anyone in a tux and I've been on quite a few cruises. So it's just my opinion but I feel that will be appropriate.;)

You will be fine! Enjoy your cruise!:)

Short one first: He'd be fine in the suit he has.

Longer answer: I'm a 48 year old guy that wears a suit to work 5 days a week. I have lighter color ones for the summer months and darker suits for the winter. In today's fashion styles virtually anything goes for suit colors.

If your cruise is in the winter months you will see more darker suits, but I'd not worry. We've had 14 (?) cruises in 31 years and the fashions for men range from polo shirt and slacks, sport coat and slacks, suits and tuxedos for formal nights.

You posted this on the Carnival boards, and I can share that no passengers are turned away if they decide to skip formal attire for the night or two aboard their vacation. In one of the hottest days in Cozumel a couple of years ago I made a Mr. Blackwell's decision :p to got a little more casual for the second formal night. We were in port until late, and I wore a Tommy Bahama floral shirt, light khakis and leather Johnston and Murphy sandals. I had company in my wardrobe choice.

Understand that Cruise Critic posters  lean towards the suit and tux attire for formal nights, but we represent a fraction of the people on your sailing.

Carnival has suggested attire, but you'd do well to spend the money slotted for an additional suit for your shipboard purchases.

Do this; get a good digital camera, if you have one get a larger memory card with the money and take twice as many pictures. They will be better memories than a new suit!

Also, Carnival has no dress code anywhere, anytime except for the dining rooms. Many change back to more casual wear after dinner, for the casino and for the shows.

Enjoy the times with your family :)

It is appropriate. Now, a suggestion: if he has his army formals (mess dress), could he wear them? It would be great!

I'm just the opposite. Where I work no one ever wears a suit or tie (the joys of being a Techie). The last time I wore a suit was several years ago, and my upcoming cruise is 10 days from now. I'm not even sure it fits!

I'll try on my suit this weekend. If it doesn't fit anymore, I'll just go out and buy a cheap Jacket to go with decent looking slacks, a white button down shirt and a tie. That's the best I can do.

It's not a competition to see who can out-dress one another (despite what the DW's would like to see out of their DH's). I'd much rather my table-mates remember me as very nice company than the person who was the snappiest dresser.

I wear a tux but your DH could wear a tux, a suit, or a sport jacket, slacks and tie. All are mentioned in Carnival's dress code, [You should go to Carnival's web site and read all the FAQ's] There is no mention of suit color, just a suit is fine and in keeping with the spirit of the dress code.

My husband has a grey suit and you can bet he will wear that next year. To even consider asking him to buy something is laughable. The only time he wears a suit is for a wedding or a funeral. Me on the other hand, I will get a new long gown, just because I love to dress up. Since I am going in September, the long gowns from summer are on sale and you an always pick up a good deal. Oh this is so like me, talking about myself

So the answer to your question, a big yes :D

Carnival has suggested attire,

Actually, it is a "required" dress code and i just got off the Liberty.....

I did not see one person on formal night, not dressed in formal attire as in suits, i saw alot more tuxes than usual and the rental shop had a line out the door. It was not a CC cruise so i guess there are alot more people than our small minority who wear suits.

As others have posted, your DH is welcome to wear whatever color he wishes.

Another poster mentioned dress blues, class A's are ok also. If he wishes. My DH doesnt like to wear them - when not required. Some soldiers do.

Last note, I am confused why you said he is in the Army and doesnt need another suit?

Have a great cruise!

I didn't mean that you'd see a majority in casual dress versus formal attire, I should have said that suits are the standard fare for most men on formal nights. I carry one as well.

You are the second poster to describe the "required" part from the Carnival Capers, and when we sail Carnival again in a couple of months I will be curious :D

To date we've seen just "suggested attire" and when I asked the waiter he said virtually anything goes for formal nights.

I have also noticed in the warmer months several tables are half full or empty as some cruisers have no desire to dress up... Good for them, they are on the same vacation as me.

For my attire, and if I want to see my 25th wedding anniversary next year it's a suit.

Not only is it not my cup of tea, nor is it my cup of coffee or espresso . I am old, guess that is why

Well, it's a Men's suit, so it probably wouldn't look very good on you!

Of course I'm assuming you'd let your DH wear it (if he wanted), as he has the authority to wear whatever he wants?

I am lucky that he wears the suit on formal nights, so it is safe to say that he would not wear that. I never tell my guy what to wear although he does ask my opinion on what goes with what.

Only because he would never wear it...it's not like he would wear it to work and, really, around here, that's about the only place I see a suit (well, occasionally weddings and funerals, but not often there either)

I wish he had dress blues, but he only has his Class As, and he just doesn't care to wear them unless he has to.

After I posted this, I realized that the suit in question was the suit he wore on our last cruise...lol, I'm pretty sure it won't fit, so this entire discussion is kind of a moot point anyway.

Do they rent tuxes on board?

Oh I see! My Dh is so differnent, he loves to wear suits. He wears then to church (not every sunday but some). EVerybody to their own. I have a almost 10 year old who also loves to wear suits and ties and I have a almost 15 year old whom I would have to tie down to get him into a suit!;)

I think even the class A's are a good choice but like I said, Dh will not wear unless he is FORCED. I got him to wear them on our first cruise and he hasnt since. (YES - I FORCED him do it). I wonder why they do not like to wear them? They look so handsome! :D

They do rent tuxes but he has to go get fitted at a tux place at home and then send in the info.
