Calling home

What is the easiest way to call home from Alaska when in a port? Does the standard calling card work? Yes I know Alaska is part of the US :-) I am asking becaue the ATT&T card says it works in the US, Canada & Carribean but I could never get it to work there.

On our last trip, we used public phones in each port and used our calling card. (Don't have any idea what 'brand' it was.) We didn't have any trouble using the card, but had to get use to the delay you experience when people speak.

AT&T works, but on many phones in Alaska you have to call 1-800-CALL-ATT to get connected.

Also you are better off not using the "temp" phones set up at the docks. Walk into town to find the permanant ones. I never had any problem using ATT calling cards.

Thanks so much for the info. We sail this Sunday now if only I could decide what to pack!
