Glory Eastern 8/18 - 8/25 Review LONG

We were a group of 8 as follows:

Me, 31 -- 3rd cruise – both previous cruises on Carnival

My dh, 37 – First time cruiser

My mom, 52 – second cruise – first cruise was on Carnival

My sister, 29 – 3rd cruise – both previous cruises on Carnival

Aunt #1, 60 ish – MANY cruises on several different lines

Aunt #2, 70 ish – First time cruiser

My cousin, 42 – 2nd cruise – first cruise was on a Carnival owned ship, but doesn’t count as a past guest….I still don’t understand that.

My cousin’s dh, 44 – same as above.

Embarktation: We arrived at the pier much later than we had wanted to, apx 2 ish. Lines were long but moved fairly well. From the time the car parkers (my sister and cousin) met up with us until we walked on the ship was about 45 minutes. We carried on 3- 12 packs of soda and we did have to open our bag to show it was just soda, otherwise it was not a problem at all. We also carried on one case of water and that was not an issue either. Even with the long lines the process seemed very efficient. We were about an hour late leaving the port. I’m still not sure why. I missed our roll call meet up..Sorry guys! My aunt was having difficulty walking and we were arranging a wheel chair for her.

Cabins: Dh and I had cabin 7439 on Empress deck. It is one of the “L” shaped cabins with the extended balcony. The crew staircase is right by the cabin but I only heard a noise once. WONDERFUL!! We thought we would miss the sofa but in reality we were not in our cabin enough to even need it. We loved, loved, loved the extended balcony and when we opened the divider (my cousin had cabin 7435 next to us) there was more than enough room for the 8 of us. I had never had a balcony cabin before and although we really loved sail away from our balcony or snapping great pictures arriving into ports from the balcony, we have decided that we just don’t need the balcony. I think we will stick with ocean view until we get a little older and just want to relax on our vacations. J We were only in the cabin to sleep, shower and dress. We never “met” our cabin steward. He came and introduced himself when dh and I were not there. He did not come back when we were there. When we passed him in the hallway my sister told us who he was. I believe his name was Stephano but I am not certain. He did a great job cleaning the cabin.

Nassau: Most of us had been there before and since we were only there for a very short amount of time we walked to the straw market and shopped a bit. Took a few pictures and went back to the ship. Two people were left behind. This is our first formal night and the captain’s party. Drinks at the Captain’s party were plentiful and strong. We did see one guy in shorts and a polo shirt….I have no idea if he went to dinner dressed this way on formal night but that is how he showed up to the party.

First day at Sea: I slept in! Oh it was great. We have a baby girl who is almost 1 so sleeping in doesn’t happen at home. We finally got up at almost 11. We wandered up to “brunch” in our jammies. It was almost noon by the time we were eating. That was the best morning ever! Back to the cabin to throw on our swim gear and back up to lido deck. We had rough waters due to Hurricane Dean so the main pool was closed. After a while the safety officer refilled the pool and decided it was ok to keep it open. We relaxed in the pool for a while. * Note to parents * Please watch your children better. The way the ship was rocking we had a very nice wave pool but some kids were scaring the dickens out of me and not a parent in sight!!! Also, I did inform a parent that swim diapers were not allowed in this pool. She chose to ignore me, so I did inform the security officer. She didn’t ignore him. We were all looking forward to the Adult only pool, it is no longer Adult only. The hot tubs still were but they were just as crowded as the hot tubs by the main pool. After some time in the pool we decided to go enjoy the hot tub. While we were sitting in the hot tub the Hairy Chest Contest started. My cousin’s dh did participate in this. It was a great laugh for us. He didn’t win. The water slide was closed due to the rough waters.

St. Thomas: We watched a stretcher be brought on board, from our balcony, but we never seen anyone be taken off and we never heard what if anything had happened. We booked with Sunny Liston tours and requested Sunny as our driver. Due to the rough water we arrived late and then it seems to have taken forever to clear customs. We finally made it off the ship after 11!! Sunny was right there waiting for us. He had Elvis drive us into town for a few minutes of shopping. Sunny met back up with us and our sight seeing “adventure” began. Oh and what an adventure it was!! I can not put into words the fun we had. The sharp curves were more than I expected and a couple of people couldn’t look up. I’m sure we were far exceeding the recommended speed but I believe that added to the excitement. Both of my aunts rode up front with Sunny, and one of them stayed with him while we were shopping due to mobility issues. We stopped for some information and photos and back on the road we went. The mountain top was unbelievable and the view of Megan’s Bay was spectacular. We were sure to get our banana daquari’s and we were off again. We were going to go to Coki beach, no way! I didn’t feel safe to get out of the truck there. We went to Saphire beach and we enjoyed that very much. One of my aunts decided to go back to the ship and Sunny took her back then. Sunny picked the rest of us up at the agreed time and we went back to the ship. I will NEVER get the days of the week song out of my head and that is a great reminder of the time we had. I highly recommend Sunny! We were still singing and shouting as we arrived back to the ship!

St Marteen: We were late getting docked (I don’t know why) so that meant we were late getting off the ship. We had booked with SMX tours (Bernard) but we had a 9:00 pick up time. We didn’t get off the ship until after 10:00. So, we missed our tour. We decided to take the water taxi over to the beach and shopping. I have no idea what beach we were on! We rented beach chairs ($5 per chair and we got a half price drink with them). We were at the bright yellow chairs, just down from water trampolines. The water was less salty and cooler than St Thomas but the sea weed/ sea grass was gross! Here the ladies walking the beach are much more pushy about buying from them. We ended up getting the towels that convert to bags for $8 each. Since we live in Florida those towels/bags will get used a lot. My cousin got a beautiful pair of pink something earrings for $100. After beach time we decided to go back to the ship to change and head back out for some real shopping. My dh, myself and my cousin and her dh were the only 4 to go back off the ship for shopping. We walked around for a couple of hours and then went back to the ship to shower and dress for dinner. My cousin and I participated in the “in the bag” game. That was a lot of fun. We didn’t win.

Sea Day: We were all so sun burned (even with multiple layers of sun screen) that we didn’t even go into the sun today. We got up around 9 and dressed for the day and headed out to breakfast. After breakfast we spent a couple hours in the casino. Dh and I decided on a nap. We went back to our cabin as other members of our group decided to do various things.

Last Day/Sea Day: We decided to get up early and have a full day of fun since our week was slipping to an end. After another Lido deck buffet breakfast our activities began. We attended the debarktation talk. Wee Jimmy is hysterical. He even made important information fun. After lunch DH and I went to the casino. I was supposed to meet my mom, cousin and Aunts for Scattergories but I didn’t make it. We were doing good in the casino and I lost track of time. I’m still in trouble for that. We watched the Newlywed game. For all of you who seen the beginning of the show, Brenda from Springfield Illinois who said her husband never proposed to her is my cousin. I’m still laughing over what Wee Jimmy did to her and her husband Mark. I think it may be even funnier on the video.

Wee Jimmy: Of the 3 cruises I have been on he is by far the best Cruise Director I have had. He is hysterical when on stage and when off stage he is a compassionate, friendly, outgoing man. Those of you who recommended him as a CD were right on!! I was so excited when I boarded and found out he was in fact back from vacation. He far exceeded my expectations.

Food: We ate lido buffet for breakfast every day. Everything was good. Typical buffet food but good. A couple of days the scrambled eggs were a little runny but we just skipped them and opted for the omlet stations.

Pizza: We loved, always do. 7 minutes for a fresh pizza is nothing! We enjoyed it several times during the week.

Burgers: Another favorite. My mom even ordered one for dinner one night. She’s weird and didn’t want anything but a burger. J

Deli: I didn’t eat at the deli but my sister did and she loved it.

Fish N Chips: Very good. I can’t believe it took me all week to get this. I finally had it on Friday for lunch. It was not greasy at all. I wish I had it earlier in the week too!

Dinning Room: We had table 184 lower level Golden Dinning Room 6:15 seating. Our waiters were Klara and Vladan. We didn’t have a head waiter. We had 2 assistants. I had no idea. We all thought that Klara was the head waiter. She is in training but she is not an official head waiter yet. They were short for head waiters so since she is in training she was acting as a head waiter. They were wonderful and worked very very well together. The food in the dinning room was always very good. We enjoyed the warm chocolate melting cake every single night. My sister’s stake was undercooked one night and it was immediately corrected. That is the only issue we ever had. However, the design of the dinning room is awful. The tables are so close that we almost felt cramped. When someone would walk by chairs were always being kicked or bumped. Several times we thought a tray full of food was going to be dumped on someone as the waiters were manuveering through the tight spaces. We could easily hear conversations from tables next to us. I realize they are serving a lot of people but I think there must be a better way to design the dinning room.

Entertainment/Shows: We went to just about everything. The dancers amaze me. How they can dance on the ship with the rough waters we had is very impressive. They did switch the shows around since one is less dangerous than the other. Lead female singer is good, but not as believable as the lead male singer. Lead male singer was very good. Carnival Legends, this show was great. We had some very talented fellow passengers! Wee Jimmy’s version of 9 to 5 had me in tears! Mark and Shawn (man I hope that was our shopper’s name) did a fantastic Sonny and Cher!

Comedians: I don’t have the capers with me and I am horrible with names but the 1st one was great and the 2nd one was awful. People were actually leaving in the middle of his show. We didn’t even bother to go to his “R” rated show the following night.

Kids: They were everywhere. Most were well behaved but many were unsupervised and running all over the place. We seen security telling the teens and tweens they couldn’t be running on Promonade or playing in the elevators. It’s too bad the security officers had to do this, the parents should be ashamed of themselves and their children.

We are already looking to book our next cruise. We had so much fun. I would recommend the Glory to anyone. This is so long I can’t imagine I left anything out but if you have any questions please ask. I took over 200 pictures but as soon as I get them all loaded I will post the link.

Lovely review, unicorn. I have a couple of questions since you recently returned. I will be sailing Glory in 2009. I know its a long ways off, but I get so excited about these things :) Anyways did you or some of your group fly in? If so where did you fly into. I am thinking off flying in the day before but not sure which airport carnival uses. Do they go into Orlando or right into Port Canaveral.

Giggles,

I was on the Glory the week before Unicorn. We flew into Orlando, rented a car, and stayed in Port Canaveral for a few days. We stayed at the Country Inn & Suites in Port Canaveral, which I highly recommend. Which itinerary are you on? I was on western, I'll be glad to answer any questions. :)

Great review, Unicorn!

I'm so glad to hear that Wee Jimmy is back as CD! :D

We are taking the same cruise on October 13th and are counting the minutes! Lol!

 I have 3 questions for you...

1) What did they serve for dinner on the first formal night...Sunday, I believe you said? (Steak & Lobster tail, I hope?)

2) When was the 2nd formal night?

3) When was the past cruiser party?

Thanks! - Rhonda

Since I live in Sarasota my family all met at my home. They all drove in. Carnival uses Orlando. I don't believe there is an airport closer to Port Canaveral. Happy Vacation Planning. Glory is a great ship.

Hi Rhonda!

Yes Sunday (Nassau) is the first formal night. Yes it is lobster night. Steak is available every night. Escargot was not served until I believe Thursday night.

Second formal night is Thursday.

I believe the past guest party was on Tuesday the first sea day. Make sure to get your Glory pin!

Have a great cruise. I wish I was going again in October!!

I live several minutes from the port. There are two airports. Orlando is the largest and it is only 40 minutes tops to drive there and it is actually one road all the way. There are all the major car rental agencies there as well as the major hotels as well. The port is right next to Cocoa beach so use that if you are searching for hotels as well.

The other Airport is Melbourne, that is only served by Delta airlines. That is about 35-40 minutes away from the port.

Do you mind if I ask what happened at Coki Beach that made you afraid to get out of the truck? We were just there the second week of August and LOVED it...felt totally safe...definitely one of my favorite places on St. Thomas now. Just curious what might have happened to cause you to feel that way...

Great review...thanks for writing!

I've never been to St Thomas before but when we were driving down the street to Coki beach we could barely get through. Both sides of the street were lined with vehicles, LOTS of people standing on the side of the street trying to sell various things. It was not what I had expected at all. When we got to saphire beach it was a lot less crowded and there were not locals trying to sell things. We never got out of the truck at Coki so perhaps my first impression is wrong. Saphire beach was great. I was completely relaxed and enjoyed the beach very much. I don't think I could have done that at Coki beach. Maybe next time.

Coki is best for snorkeling. The water there is unbelievable, it's so beautiful (we did Snuba there...highly recommend!). Unfortunately, the beach area itself is not that large, so if there are several ships in port that day, I can only imagine how crowded it might be. We only had 2 our last day there, so it was relatively uncrowded. I've also been to Sapphire...the only thing I didn't like there was the seaweed and lack of facilities. I don't know how it is now, but when we were there in 2006, the Sapphire Resort was closed and so there was nowhere to get an actual meal or bar service, other than a bottled Coke or beer.

We had 3 ships in port in St Thomas. Very crowded island! I have always wanted to try Snuba. I will definately keep that in mind for future cruises. I'm sure we will go back to St Thomas some day! We didn't have any seaweed on Saphire. Now, in St Marteen that's a whole different story...uck! My aunt ordered from a bar/resterant on the beach but she just got a sandwhich/chips/drink. It was just a few feet from where we were enjoying the sun. I also want to go to Magen's Bay. The view from Mountain Top was amazing! Shoot, now my list keeps getting longer. :D

He looked great! :D It seemed everytime he was on stage and didn't have the kilt on he was asked about it. I would imagine that would get old real fast.

Enjoy your upcomming cruise!

Hey Chris,

Thanks for responding. I actually checked with my TA and she will be putting us (If we go a day early) in the Orlando Ariport Marriott and then we will shuttle to the port on Saturday morning. I will be doing the Eastern itinerary since I have never been to the Bahamas before. Since our itineraries are different, its still the same ship. So any do's and don'ts for Glory.

This is just a thought...but if you go a day early, you might want to do some sightseeing. You'll be pretty limited to cabs only staying at an airport hotel. Perhaps you can talk to your TA and she can recommend (or one of us on the boards can) a hotel closer to "the action" and also arrange an affordable rental vehicle for you. They can be dropped off near Port Canaveral (in Cocoa Beach, usually) and the rental car company will shuttle you to the port from there.

Another option would be staying at a Disney property (the All-Star resorts are very affordable). They have a service called Magical Express (or something like that) where you pre-tag your bags before you check them at home with the airline and Disney picks up your bags for you and delivers them to your resort. They also have a shuttle for you to/from your resort and the airport. All the Disney properties and theme parks are connected through some form of complimentary Disney transportation (bus, monorail, etc.). You can then take the cruise line shuttle the next day to Port Canaveral from the airport.

If you have any questions or need more info, please don't hesitate to ask. I just wouldn't want to see you having to spend a day at an airport hotel if you didn't want to pay cab fare everywhere, if you don't have to! :)

Thanks. I am actually taking notes on everything and will present them to the rest of my group and see what they want to do. These boards are such a great thing. I have only been on 2 cruises approaching my 3 but I have been so prepared (thanks to cruise critic's boards) that I went on vacation like I have been cruising all my life!:) :D :)

What a detailed trip report!

I know about the two people left in Nassau.

My daughter and her friend.

They wanted to do something "on their own" in Nassau and got a cab to some beach.

Fare to the beach $10.

Fare back from the beach $40.

Unhuh...

(Panic stricken parents...priceless?)

They didn't have that much cash left, so had to find someone to share the ride and missed the boat.

If you miss the boat...well, just don't do it!

(And ask if the cab fare back to the boat is the same price as cab fare to the beach, I guess)

I met a couple on the plane home who were not impressed with the beach on St Maarten. (They went to the beach near the dock)

The poor things didn't make it to the "good" beach.

We had a tour with Victor Bryan (victor.bryan@wanadoo.fr)

He was waiting for us on the dock holding a sign with our name on it and took us on a lovely tour.

We went to a beach on the French side of the island that was so beautiful that it did not even look real.

The whole place actually looked photo shopped.

Really incredibly beautiful and the water was an amazing blue...an unreal color.

Victor was recommended by Sunny Liston and he took us all over the island.

He is much quieter than Sunny (the world is not big enough for two Sunnys!) and gives a really informative tour.

Oh, his vans are air conditioned.

(A good thing :D)

OH MY GOODNESS!!! I believe we met! Were you on Sunny's tour? I think you and I actually met after the tour as we were getting back on the ship? If I am mistaken I appologize.

I'm so sorry for your daughter and her friend. Did they meet back up with the ship? I would have been extremely panic stricken. Poor parents and poor girls! I can't believe the cost of a taxi back to the ship was so much higher I never would have imagined that. Oh I feel so bad for them now.

Yes, that was me.

Fortunately her friend is a rather large young man.

They actually had a great time.

(They knew all along that they were okay!)

DH and I were the ones who were terrified.

They were on the dock in Nassau in time to see the ship sail and the pursers desk was able to get in contact with their agent on the dock fairly soon.

(Well, after I had already had to make a written statement about when we had last seen them, ect.)

The scariest part was that the purser's desk told us that they would meet back up with the ship in St Thomas.

When we got back from Sunny's tour and checked, no daughter!, we went right to the purser's desk.

The purser's desk told us that they had no idea where the kids were.

This was when I started to go from worried to panic (on the way to hysteria)

The purser's desk got us the phone number for airlines that fly out Nassau and DH was able to get someone to look up their flights.

They went from Nassau, to Miami, to San Juan, to St Maarten.

The agent on the dock had the information that they would not be able to meet back up with the ship until St Maarten, but for some unknown reason did not pass it along.

While I was panicking, the kids were having a great time in St Maarten.

They are both ready to move to St Maarten.:D

It did cost them a lot (a whole lot) of money.

They are paying for all that themselves.

So, it was their fault that they missed the boat, but if it happens to you, don't expect a lot of help from Carnival.
