Hi, we leave tomorrow on th legend and I have a quick ?. The card you need to use for the room safe, does t need to have a bar code or a magnetic strip like credit cards, or could you use either? Thanks for the help.

It should be some kind of card with a magnetic strip. You can use just about anything, but I've heard of some not working so you may want to have a couple. Old library cards, grocery cards, expired credit cards etc. should work.

The card for your safe must have a magnetic strip. Folks have used credit cards, drivers license, phone cards, gift cards, etc. Almost anything with a magnetic strip will work. I would take several different cards and give them a try. Have a great cruise.

Almost any card with a magnetic stripe will work. One word of caution though, only the exact card that locked the safe will unlock it. If anything happens to the card, security will have to come and unlock the safe for you.

Make sure that the person who acesses the safe the most, holds the card. I had to get into the safe once but hubby had the card and I had to go searching for him on the ship.

I've had trouble using cards that didn't have a *black* magnetic strip. I have a few CC with gray strips that simply wouldn't work. Not sure if it was just the safe in our cabin, but I always use one with a black magnetic strip now.

Do all ships have the card-operated safes, or do older ones -- for example, Holiday or Jubilee -- have keypads?

We used a grocery store card. We left it in the room hidden is a suit pocket jacket--or in a old pair of sneaks - even the medicine cabinet.. In case one of us needs to get in there.

On the Jubilee we had to get a key from the room steward. There is a $40 deposit required to get the key that is refunded when the key is returned.

You did not use a card for the safe on the Holiday, You entered a code of your choosing. You had to be careful when you closed it though to be sure and hit the star button after entering the code or it didn't lock. You could hear it locking when it was done correctly.
