Altun Ha or other Mayan ruins in Belize?

We are cruising in July and want to see some of the Mayan ruins we have heard about in Belize. We are hoping for a "short" excursion (less than 5 hours) as we have another day planned with a very long excursion.

I have heard of a number of private companies that do excursions/tours to ruins, etc. in Belize.

Can anyone give me some recommendations or reviews of your experiences?

I believe the altun Ha ruins are the closest. There other major ruins I believe are all day excursions.

We did Altun Ha and really enjoyed them. On our next visit we will do one of the longer tours. We went to the port and signed up for the tour there. When you arrive at the port, go to your right. There is a licensed tour guide booth there. Prices were reasonable. There were 5 of us in a minivan. Very individualized.

For our cruise, we did the ship's excursion to Lamanai which took up the whole day. We loved it but when we arrived back at where we were to pick up the tender it was the 2nd to last for the day and many of the shops had already closed so we didn't even have time to shop!

One of the excursions that they promoted on the ship and big time in port was the cave tubbing. If we take another cruise that goes to Belize we will do that!

Do you recall which tour group you used for your Altun Ha tour?

We are a family of five, and would appreciate the individualized attention...

but we hesitate to wait until we get to the port to make arrangements...

Thanks.

I believe even the Altun Ha excursion is usually listed at between 4-5 hours, as it is at least an hour of travel time each way.

The Lamanai excursion is usually listed as being 7 hours long.

We've never been to Belize and chose to make the Lamanai trip our "long excursion day".

Both tours can be booked through the ship or any of the other private vendors discussed frequently on here. (I cannot recommend any of them as I have never used them.)

GOOD LUCK!

:)
