Riverwatcher Posted January 26, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 26, 2008 Has anyone experienced the Atlantis Submarine? Can you book it on your own? I believe that Atlantis has a website and you can get booking information there ( try google). We did the Atlantis in Aruba in 2006 but booked it through the cruise line. Pomperaugrr Posted January 28, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2008 We just did the Atlantis submarine in Barbados last week. You can book it on your own, but we booked through the ship (RCI). The tour is nicely done. There is a 10 minute boat ride out to the sub. You go through a safety briefing, then board the sub. Once you are on the sub, you go down to 140-150 feet. Visibility was great (about 90 feet on our trip) and the crew was very nice. You are under water for about 40 minutes. Due to the depth, you don't see brilliant colors, but there were very healthy coral reefs, lots of fish and a nice shipwreck. It is a fun excursion and very well run. We've done the sub in other places, but this was the first time we were able to stay and watch/photograph the sub diving with the next group that had boarded it. There is soda and rum punch available on the return trip. Is there anywhere in the Caribbean that does not have rum punch? :) We booked the first tour of the day, which gave our kids time in Adventure Ocean and us in the spa afterward. Dall Posted January 28, 2008 #4 Share Posted January 28, 2008 Eric, I am glad you responded. We have booked this tour through RCI in Feb. I have been surprised that no one on the threads has talked about it. Was starting to get worried. Thanks for the info.
Pomperaugrr Posted January 30, 2008 #5 Share Posted January 30, 2008 We felt the same way. We didn't see much in the way of postings on Cruise Critic. They had a full sub though. You don't feel crowded, because you are looking out of the viewing ports the whole time. If you do a Google search for Atlantis submarines, Inc. you will find the company site. You can then click on Barbados and see your route and some nice photos. Photos of the reef have artificial light, so the colors of the coral are vibrant. You will experience the trip with natural light, so you get the real feel for how it is to be down that deep. The coral colors are muted, but the fish are still brightly colored. It is very humbling. Quick tip: If you are traveling with kids, you can ask nicely to have them sit up front by the pilot. That way they (and you) get the added views out of the front window used by the pilot.
