Cash or traveler's checks

I would get mostly traveler's checks in the paper form. Some places will issue you a type of debit card. Unfortunately, with this card, you will have to pay for ATM fees. If you need cash, then go to the purser's desk and cash in the amount you need. This way, if you lose your traveler's checks or they are stolen, you can still recuperate them. Cash wise, do not forget to bring small bills for tips.

Concur. Travelers Checks are a bit of a hassle, but if you ever loose them (and you are smart and saved the numbers) they can be replaced in full.

I have never had a problem having them cashed for free by the purser... but then the last time I was on a ship, I did not have to pay for soft drinks!

I used the cash about what I would need for the day, and go with that.

Many local shops and vendors prefer cash! Just take cash, it's much easier! (We take large bills, so they take up less room, and get them broken on the ship, as needed. You don't want to pay for a $3.00 item with a hundred dollar bill--you may get "local" money as change!)

We always take cash. Seems to us that travelers checks are more or less an outdated idea with the expanded use of credit cards and availability of ATM's. Also, on some lines you can get cash at the casino, charged to your ship board account which in turn goes to your credit card, for no extra charge and it shows up like a purchase and not a cash advance on your credit card. But this does vary by line - some charge a service fee for cash advances and some don't. Even if they charge a service charge it might be better than buying travelers checks. You can probably get details on this by asking on the board for your cruise line.

Take a little cash, and use a credit card. Traveler's checks are just a nusiance these days...everyone takes credit/debit cards, and you can always get some cash from an ATM if you want to buy something from a street vendor.
