h2odad Posted March 27, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2008 My wife and I will be on a Rhine River cruise this May, and are looking for any suggestions for special, local, tips, such as cafes, pubs, biergartens, out-of-the-way shops, that locals enjoy, but may not be part of an organized tour. Anything for the following locations would be great: Vienna, Linz, Regensburg, Roth, Numberg, Bamberg, Hassfurt, Gerlachshausen, wurzburg, Karlstadt, Mittenberg, and Mainz. Thank You
tomschm Posted March 28, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 28, 2008 Hi I am living in Nuremberg and I nice place is a cafe opposite the Dürerhouse. The name is Wanderer (http://www.cafe-wanderer.de). Next to it there is a bar which offers a wide range of local beer. Good beergarden is Kettensteg at Maxplatz (http://www.sudhausnuernberg.de/kettensteg/index.html ) or Krakauer Turm with a romantic beergarden called Kopernikus at Hintere Insel Schuett 34 (http://www.restauration-kopernikus.de/). Here you enjoy your meal directly on the city wall. The city tour will end right in the city center of Nuremberg (Hauptmarkt). From here it is only a few seconds walk into the biggest pedestrian area in Europe. You find all different shops in there. Expensive shops are in Kaiserstrasse. You might also have a look into Oberer Wörthstrasse (by the way also a loveley cafe called La Violetta is located in a flower shop). Then walk up to Weisser Turm and through Karolinenstrasse. In case you feel homesick there are plenty Starbucks!! Enjoy your stay in Germany Tom
Rare steamboats Posted March 28, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 28, 2008 h2odad, Check out this thread http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=391735 where I pointed out some things in Regensburg, Passau and other towns along your route. Bamberg is a very pretty town. Just walk around! Try to get some "Rauchbier" or "Schlenkerla" which is a dark, smokey tasting local beer. You´ll get it anywhere. http://www.stadt.bamberg.de/ http://www.schlenkerla.de/ I don´t think you will stop very long in Karlstadt. Karlstadt has a pretty medieval downtown area with a nice historic town hall. It´s surrounded by a historic city wall which is totally intact on the river side. You won´t need more than 30min - 45 min to walk around. Usually the ship only stop for picking up people from the busses or letting them get on busses for the Würzburg tour. Opposite the town you´ll see the ruin of the Charles castle up on the bluffs. http://www.karlstadt.de/ Here´s a link for Würzburg http://www.wuerzburg.de/ The town was pretty much damaged during WWII. The main points of interest are the Residenz and the Feste Marienberg. http://www.residenz-wuerzburg.de/ http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/englisch/palace/objects/wu_fest.htm Würzburg is also famous for its Franconian wine (dry), try Juliusspital or Hofkeller http://www.juliusspital.de/html/20_ENG_HTML.htm http://www.hofkeller.de/hofkeller/start.html#Eingang (no English language option) Nuremberg is pretty difficult to explore as the ship is docking in the harbor area of the Canal which is not within walking distance of the downtown area. You need a cab to go there on your own. As for Roth, Gerlachshausen or Hassfurt I assume these are also more or less "technical" stops for bus tours. Miltenberg has also a nice downtown area. http://www.miltenberg.info/ (no English language option). steamboats
