We Have Soooo Much Change

Recommended Posts

We have been saving change for years, and have acquired quite a bit. We have a big sparkletts water jug more than half full. I keep telling my DH that is our vacation money, but we just don't have the time to roll it all up. I absolutely will not take it to one of those change machine (what a rip-off). I guess we will have to eventually do it. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to get started? Aren't there coin counting machines you can buy?

My bank will only accept up to 10 rolls at a time. Otherwise, they have a machine you dump it in and they charge 3%. I don't think that's so bad if you figure the value of your time to count and roll the coins, especially pennies.

Also, our bank used to require you write your account number on the side....I don't think I want my account number on rolls all over town.

I work in a bank-so please get started and only bring in a few rolls at a time. Sit down and watch tv and start rolling those coins. The coin counting machines you buy at walmart, etc. do not count correctly and I hate to see people bring in rolls that have been done on one of those machines. We require either your name or phone number on each roll. So,please get started soon. It's not bad if you just do a few each night. I save all my coin for cruises, too.

Putting your name or phone number on the rolls is unacceptable. If the bank simply reissues the rolls back out, your name and/or phone number is out all around town.

Them banks just don't trust their customers. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count to 50 pennies!

I take mine to the market when my jar starts getting too heavy to manage.

Dump them in and it's "pay the lady" time.

I was against those machines too......but finally realized that my time is worth more than they charge...plus it's DONE! One less thing to worry about and that's worth something too.

Break down & give the machines a try!

It's worth the time. My two children (ages 9 & 16) and I sat down Monday afternoon, popped in a movie and started rolling. We had one of those 5 gallon water bottles about half full. We were finished not long after the movie went off. Now we are $162.50 richer for our cruise!! Not bad in my opinion for 2 1/2 hours work.

My credit union has a change machine also. But after having to roll tons of change my DH brought home from a long business trip, I now roll as soon as we have enough to make a roll. Then when I have about 15-20 rolls, I take them to the bank, labelled with my acct # and my initials, and put the money in to the vacation acct.

I have one of those big plastic water jugs about half full and spent an hour sorting it into separate containers (quarters, nickles, etc). The next day I started rolling one container and rolled all the quarters. The next day I rolled dines...etc. And wouldn't you know it - I got a batch of nickel holders that must have been glued wrong -- there was just no way they would fit! Had to pick up different ones from the bank. So it took several evenings while watching TV - but I wound up with a whopping $358. This will pay for several excursions on our January cruise. And that's only since December of last year -- I'd cleaned it out before then for my trip to Disney but I very rarely spend any of my change -- it all goes into the jug!

Can anyone who works in a bank answer whether or not banks rewrap the coins? While I don't get rolls of coin from the bank, I can't remember ever seeing a cashier open a roll with someone's name or account number written on it.

I got a water jug (the big ones in like in a office) it's about a 35% full if change... We will cash it in next week before we leave and make it our tip and casino money(well some of it at least)! I'll post how much we have when I cash it in next weekend (our cruise is on the 6th of Nov.) We started about 6 or 7 months ago. I just fight temptation to dip in there anytime I need change. I rather break a dollar and put the change from that dollar in there it seems to make more sense to me.

Also our credit union (Delta Airline) will cash it in for us without a service fee, I just have to depoist it. So I don't have to roll it which is GOOD!!!! :)

Our bank allows us to bring our change in, leave a deposit slip, and then after about 1 week, a deposit is made in our account..this time $729.55 Yipee!! Ask your bank manager. Most (in our state) will count the change but cannot possible do this in a day's time.

for those of you that do not have a bank that will do it for free, or won't spend the service charge to wrap coin, do what several businesses do. Any of the national chain office supply stores have coin counter/rollers that are no more than plastic tubes calibrated to size with a slit in the top. fill with the appropriate coin until full, slip on the wrapper (not special ones that you have to buy, but the bulk ones that you get at a bank) and presto! all done.... they run about 4.95 and i've had mine for the last 15 years.

Just take it in to one of the casino's and tell its the money you want to spend then cash it out at another station.

We have been saving in a five gallon water bottle for 2 1/2 years, it was about 7/8 full of change. 3 weeks ago when we booked our cruise we cashed it in to pay for it. We took it to Commerce(we don't have an account there) The money we saved paid in full for our cruise We had $1881.........needless to say we were thrilled!

I know all the banks in my area have the change counting machines. And I also know that my credit union won't accept rolled change anymore- you have to bring it in loose. I would suggest calling your banks and find out if they do this too before you roll it all up just to unroll it later!
