riekl Posted October 14, 2004 #1 Share Posted October 14, 2004 I very much want to take my GPS on my cruise, I certainly dont need road level detail =) However I would like to be able to look at the unit and say theres Cuba 20 miles of starboard ! Every GPS software I find is just usa or at best USA/Canadian maps, i've found some that sell europe topology and in some cases street level but where can i get a worldwide basic map ? bUU Posted October 15, 2004 #2 Share Posted October 15, 2004 I did this search about a month ago. There's only one I found: BlueChart http://www.garmin.com/cartography/bluechart/ I found it prohibitively expensive, so I'm just using WorldMap, which doesn't have Topo, and actually isn't all that accurate. :-\
mafig Posted October 15, 2004 #3 Share Posted October 15, 2004 Go to the Princess board. There's a big discussion on this. My dh has a garmin unit he purchased three years ago. He always takes it on cruises, and it comes with a world map. These units are easily purchased at Target, Wallmart, ebay. The two top selling brands are Magellan and Garmin. nitnyleo Posted October 15, 2004 #4 Share Posted October 15, 2004 For a new toy for my next cruise, its either a Garmin GPS or binocular/camera... Garmin does have a world map: http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/WM.jsp They also have an "Americas Recreational" map, which includes the Caribbean. But, the GPS needs to be tried out in the store, since the descriptions seem to be confusing and incomplete. BlueChart, as suggested by another poster, might be cool....you would know when you're over that really deep water...but, I cant figure out what kind of topo info they provide Good luck...I'll probably buy the binocular/camera
bUU Posted October 15, 2004 #5 Share Posted October 15, 2004 That WorldMap is the one I have (along with US Road Maps, and US TOPO). Comparatively poor vis a vis the location and shape of the islands. It had the actual location of Coco Cay somewhere out at sea.
