TWO4THESEA Posted July 27, 2008 #1 Share Posted July 27, 2008 We'll be in Talkeetna in a few weeks and will be there on a cruise/tour for about a day. What is there to do there if you don't take a land excursion? And if the the excursion is the way to go, any suggestions?? thanks in advance M
Budget Queen Posted July 27, 2008 #2 Share Posted July 27, 2008 My top choice is a McKinley summit flight, you are not likely to see McKinley without one and a single day visit. There is also the Park Service and climbing exhibit. Small town, good for walking about.
RSF Cruiser Posted July 27, 2008 #3 Share Posted July 27, 2008 Stroll through the cemetary on the edge of town - there's a nice monument to those who have lost their lives attempting to summit Mt McKinley, some spirit houses, and interesting tomb stones. We probably spent an hour there - very peaceful and relaxing.
Glaciers Posted July 28, 2008 #4 Share Posted July 28, 2008 Other than a Mckinley flight you can take a Riverboat tour. There are also several hikes near Talkeetna. We just spent the night there last Friday. It was interesting how the town changes from a daytime tourist destination to a locals place in the evening. We thorougly enjoyed the Denali Cooks at the Fairview. kenish Posted July 28, 2008 #5 Share Posted July 28, 2008 Eat at Talkeetna Roadhouse. Their food is average, but the atmosphere is great! It's more about saying you ate there than the food itself. You can split a breakfast; a regular one is 8 eggs and the half breakfast is 4. They feed the very hungry climbers that require many more calories than we do!
Budget Queen Posted July 28, 2008 #6 Share Posted July 28, 2008 I've alway found the Roadhouse to have excellent food, but haven't been there in a few years. Sounds like you hit an off day, hopefully and the standards haven't dropped. They only serve breakfast and lunch. At dinner time, they have soup and fresh bread, it is a big difference when all the tour buses have left. A few nights I've stayed there, there were board games and ad lib musicans playing.
