Just a question..

Recommended Posts

Not wanting any unnecessary, ungracious comments....I have just read on another forum that someone has picked up July 2008 brochure of Thomson cruises and they say it apparently says smoking is allowed in cabins though strongly discouraged and in one area inside. Has anyone else seen this? Does it mean that they have changed their mind? or is this person mistaken? Or is it Thomson incompetence by including old guidelines in new brochures? Anyone shed light on this......without being insulting or rude please. Thanks

I reckon it is just an error in producing the brochure, for example using a previous version from say a year ago and then forgetting that there have been changes in that year. A question of lax version control which can easily happen in the publication business, I know because I worked in design and publications for many years!. The travel document for my upcoming Celebration cruise says strictly designated areas of open decks only so no change there. I will know more in about 3 weeks.

The Destiny write up on Thomsons own web site says

"Please note: Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the ship"

I shall report back in October after carrying out an exhaustive survey while on board.

Please don't tell Banjoman1 about this new thread, as he's been away from this forum for some time and we don't want to start him off again, do we?!

Now now Rosebaskets! Banjoman may have a point re false advertising if in fact they have made a mistake in printing! Anyway thanks for the comments- guess it is a misprint if in fact it appears as reported, but Thomson opening themselves up for alot of trouble if it is!

The tickets, which arrived today state the same "in strictly designated areas on the open deck" If i'd have booked and Thomson had changed their policy I would be very upset too. I think the majority of us agreed with him, but he lost some support by dragging it out (no pun intended)

I'm on the Destiny from the 18th and it will be a magical mystery tour for our independent trip to Pisa. The tickets and internet say ship docks in Livorno. The brochure and the travel agent say Marina Di Carrara. I phoned Thomson and they said Livorno. The travel agent phoned Thomson (on the same number) and they said Marina Di Carrara!

I hope the Captain knows

Lol!!! Well good luck with that! In any event you will have a great time no doubt, I have just come back from my 5th Thomson cruise and had a wonderful time again! Take your point about the extended debate re smoking- but as a smoker, I sympathise with his disappointment. Anyway enjoy your cruise!

Just wanted to clarify for those smokers (or even non smokers) the July edition of Thomson cruises brochure does indeed state that smoking is allowed in cabins and normally in one inside bar. I called Thomsons to clarify and was told, after speaking to a supervisor, that the July edition's smoking policy is correct, and it is not a misprint-that is- smoking is allowed in cabins, though discouraged and in at least one inside area. They could not however tell me which ship or ships currently sailing allow this since I have just come back off the Spirit and it was not allowed. Thomsons really do need to clarify this. Just thought I would post this for those interested. Thanks- happy cruising!

Thanks for the information Sobral.I am not sure at all what Thomson are trying to achieve - other than cause confusion.I am also awaiting a response via this forum from the site managers regarding the Cruise Critic on board smoking policies.

Don't panic!

My Celebration document received AFTER July clearly states no smoking inside so if they do allow it words will be said. I still suspect this is a communications shambles either way. They have the restriction but don't want to upset smokers or no restriction and don't want to upset non-smokers. Time will give us the answer and anyway it won't spoil my cruise and might even keep me out of the casino!

Am I the only person who finds it somewhat weird that people can light up a fag in the cabins, yet irons and kettles aren't allowed for "health & safety" reasons!! Surely it must always have been a bigger safety issue for people to smoke in the cabins (though I do have a small degree of sympathy if it's now right OUTSIDE).

I think the real point in all this is the lack of clarity from Thomsons on this issue. Misprint, misinformation etc is not acceptable in anyone's book when a company is advertising a product and on which information people buy the product in good faith. It is irrelevant what anyone's view is on smoking/not smoking on ships in this instance.

 Déja Vue!

It's just a jump to the left

And then a step to the right

With your hands on your hips

You bring your knees in tight

But it's the pelvic thrust

That really drives you insane

Let's do the time warp again

Let's do the time warp again

You ain't nothing but a groundhog

been snoopin' 'round my door

You ain't nothing but a groundhog

been snoopin' 'round my door

You can wag your tail but I

ain't gonna feed you no more

You told me you was high class

well I could see through that

You told me you was high class

well I could see through that

And baby I know

You ain't a real cool cat

You ain't nothing but a groundhog

been snoopin' 'round my door

You ain't nothing but a groundhog

been snoopin' 'round my door

You can wag your tail but I

ain't gonna feed you no more.

There, that's better.

"You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension - a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone"

If Thomson have any 'uniformity' then our tickets for the Emerald on 3 Oct have just arrived and might answer the can/can't smoke debate.

Clearly state "smoking is only permitted in strictly designated areas of the open deck. Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the ship".
