Monte Carlo in May

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been to Monte Carlo in May during the F1 races. How was it getting around? Were the Trains running? We will be there 18th of of May.Thank you for any information.

We were there three years ago on a Med cruise in May. The races were to start the very next day. The only impact was that there were all these bleachers set up on the grounds and gardens opposite the casino, and some temporary fences and barriers installed along some roads. It would have been nice to NOT have them there, but it didn't really impact our enjoyment of our day.

As far as I know, all public transportation was running as normal. We took cabs a couple times, and didn't have any trouble finding one. The city was a bit crowded, but having never been there before I have no idea if it was more crowded than normal. We visited all the major sights, and I don't recall lines being unreasonably long to see anything, including going in to see the tombs of Prince Ranier (who'd just died) and Princess Grace. We didn't have any trouble getting around, and overall had a wonderful day in Monte Carlo.

We were there in May 2007 during the time trials for the Grand Prix. Traffic was a HUGE problem and the roads had been rerouted. Our HAL ship was tendered right off Monocco and we had chosen to take a 4 hour ship tour in the morning that went on the upper and middle Cornishe highways overlooking the Mediterranean to Nice and then to Eze. There was about an hours delay getting the bus to us because of the traffic problems, but the tour wasa wonderful. In the afternoon we walked to The Rock and had a fabulous time touring the castle, Napolean Muuseum, the Cathedral where Princess Grace and Prince Ranier were married and are buried, the public gardens overlooking the sea, the shops, the changing of the guard AND were able to view the races in progress from up on the Rock for free! On the way back down we were stopped at an intersection with a tunnel leading right into the castle by an entourage of black SUV's with flags flying and motorcycle escort that had to be escorting Prince Albert and his entourage back to the castle after a day at the races!
