Emerald Upgrade

We reservered a Baltic/Russia cruise while on our Alaska cruise and chose an outside cabin, Emerald deck. She asked us if we would like an upgrade if possible and we, of course, said ok. Just what does that consist of and when would we know what it would be?

An upgrade can be anything from a move to a higher category outside cabin to a move to a suite. Usually, with an outside cabin a upgrade would take you to a balcony. You can hear about the upgrade at any time, but rarely before final payment. Check the cruise personaizer. If your cabin changes, you have been upgraded. Some people don't learn of the upgrade until they are checking in at the pier.

This is a standard question asked of those who book Princess cruises. Whether they book onboard another cruise, through a TA or through Princess directly after you return home.

It in no way means you will definitely get that upgrade, it just means if they need your stateroom you will be WILLING TO ACCEPT a different one.

 

You and about 90% of the other passengers booked on your sailing have this checked on thier booking.

 

Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying it will not happen, just that the chances of being upgraded above the type of stateroom you already have booked are slim. You could end up in the category you booked, or a higher one in the same type of stateroom or you may even get an upgrade to the next class of cabin. But you just never ever can count on one or even look forward to it happening.

 

IF you by chance should receive an upgrade, the best place to look for it would be on your Princess personalizer online. If your stateroom number changes, if you booked an assigned cabin, it will show up there. If you booked a guaranteed cabin, when your cabin is finally assigned, it will also show up there. This can happen anytime from the day you book until the moment you actually board the ship. Although it normally happens at least a few days before your cruise date.

 

I hate to sound like a broken record here, but ALWAYS book the minimum category stateroom you will be happy and comfortable in. And NEVER count on being upgraded. Also, keep in mind that all upgrades are not great upgrades. There are areas of the ship that are less desireable.

What you have to be careful of is that the Upgrade might be to a better cabin category but in a location that isn't as "good" as the one you initially booked. ken

Ken076 -- That's what I was concerned about, I doubt we'll get a balcony at outside prices, but we're happy with what we have now and didn't want to get "upgraded" to a less convenient location.

Many upgrades are just the same cabin on a different deck. I don't really look at those as worthwhile upgrades, particularly when you go from centrally located to one end of the ship or the other. But real upgrades do happen. We have gone from outside to balcony twice. It isn't normal but it is appreciated. The last time it happened we moved to a balcony cabin across the hall from the laundromat. We figured it was a hard cabin to book given the potential for noise. It turned out that noise wasn't a problem...we hardly knew the laundromat was there.
