Where to Yum Cha ( Dim Sum in North America )in Auckland, Melbourne & Sydney?

Appreciate suggestions on authentic Chinese restaurants ( especially those with many Chinese patrons ) in these ports, preferably within short cab ride from pier or city centre as that's where our group plan to do their shopping.

Try this list - but I can't vouch personally for any of them. The places I usually go to are on the North Shore, which would probably be a bit too complicated for your requirements.

Of those on the list, I can personally vouch for the Palace (located in the Piccadilly Arcade in the middle of the city) and the Marigold Citymark (in Chinatown) ... both are very good. There are many others in Chinatown so worth just going there.

 

Similarly, there are many to choose from in Melbourne's Chinatown, towards the top end of Little Bourke Street.

The ‘Grand’ in the name of this new Chinese restaurant is well chosen. It’s a very large, impressively decorated space, situated in the heart of the residential and office district of Viaduct Basin. The fittings are classy, with softly furnished banquettes and chairs, contemporary light fittings and curved glass interior walls – and none of the red-tasselled extras we are used to in Chinese restaurants around the city.

 

And the menu too is ‘grand’, with an impressive selection of choices at Yum Cha. (For those unfamiliar with Yum Cha, a variety of dumpling-like snacks and tasty treats are offered at the table. Each time you accept a dish the waiter marks it down on your bill and, as you leave, the total is totted up and paid for at the desk. It’s a fun and sensible way to eat at midday, as you select how much you need.)

 

Yum Cha is prepared daily and according to the menu placed on each table there are almost 70 dishes to choose from.
