julieds Posted April 24, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 24, 2004 Does anyone know when the Grandeur is scheduled to go into drydock? I'm interested in a cruise from Baltimore this summer, and wondering if that will be before or after drydock? Thanks (in advance) for helping a newby! Rare many cruises Posted April 24, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 24, 2004 We are also interested in a summer cruise on the Grandeur. Does anyone know when it will be refurbished? Also, if anyone can tell us pros & cons of sailing out of Baltimore that would be great! Many Cruises
erin_cruisers Posted April 25, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 25, 2004 If you go to any website Including RCI's and look at the deck layouts, they change as of May 1st., so I'm thinking that the refit must be happening just prior to that. On another thread I read that some ships are getting refurbs done during a cruise. (which is bizarre IMHO) Routine maintenance is one thing, but ripping out carpet and closing off wings, is over the top. (again, this is only what I read on another post) I have been trying to find out about a refit, by searching on Google, but no success. Anyone else... TimmyII Posted April 25, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 25, 2004 RCI is not changing any of the floorplans. The are merely changing the designations of some of the cabins. ie:minisuites are gonna be JR suites, not ocean view suites ect. Hoopster3145 Posted April 25, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 25, 2004 They are changing categories on ALL ships. newsier Posted April 25, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 25, 2004 Our 25 October 2004 cruise on the Grandeur was cancelled by RCI because they said it was going into drydock. Till the Voyager..............
Grandmom Posted April 25, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 25, 2004 IndeeGlenn is correct. I tried to book that cruise at the time it was being cancelled. At the time, no one from RCI would say what was happening, but the web site said no cabins were available. Finally a TA told me about the drydock. I am now on the 1st cruise after the drydock. Good idea? I don't know, but I'm not going to let it bother me!! many cruises....your question is an easy one. If you live anywhere near Baltimore, and can avoid having to fly to the port, it's all good. It was one of the main reasons I did the Serenade repo out of Philly. Only had to fly one way. With the Baltimore cruise, you won't have to fly at all!! Darlene Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional!! Grandmom Posted April 26, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 26, 2004 Hi Michelle!!! Glad you got another cruise booked, and Hawaii no less!!! Way to go. As you saw above I opted for the 1st cruise after the drydock out of NO. It would have been nice to end up in NO from Baltimore though. My girlfriend and I are looking at Hawaii next March on the Legend. We have been given a fabulous deal, too good to turn down. But I'm still thinking on it. iluvcruzin Posted April 27, 2004 #11 Share Posted April 27, 2004 sorry they cancelled your cruise IndeeGlenn. But be glad in that this ship is in dire need of a visit to drydock. I was on the Granduer the begining of the month. I think they were waiting for spring break to be over or something because it needs a good scrubbing. norbe37817 Posted April 27, 2004 #12 Share Posted April 27, 2004 We know a lot of the officers on the Grandeur and in December they told us that they were thinking of cutting the ship in to and inserting a piece that would give them additional cabins. They claimed that the work could be done in one week by doing some prep work on the way to the dry dock and finish the work on the way out. That is a lot of cutting and welding to do in one week's time. Again, they said they were thinking about doing this. I hope they don't because I think she is the perfect size. peggy

ernie16 Posted April 27, 2004 #14 Share Posted April 27, 2004 Peggy I hate to think RCL would do that to such an awsome ship...But as we all know its about the revenue In fact in Rcl's early years they were very successful in doing the same to there very first ships..so if anyone could pull it off they could. norbe37817 Posted April 27, 2004 #15 Share Posted April 27, 2004 DH and I have trouble walking so we always prefer the smaller ships and by getting a cabin between the elevators, it was ideal. From what I understand, they will slightly increase the dining space but not the show rooms. Where will they put all those extra people especially around the pool? peggy
PattyW Posted April 27, 2004 #16 Share Posted April 27, 2004 Just curious - what exactly happens in drydock? New carpet, paint, cabin furniture? Should I expect it to look like a brand new ship when we sail in November? norbe37817 Posted April 27, 2004 #17 Share Posted April 27, 2004 We were on in December and we had all new carpet, drapes, spread, etc. Remember, there is also plumbing, electrical work and so many other things that can't be done at sea. peggy
Grandmom Posted April 27, 2004 #18 Share Posted April 27, 2004 I like the Grandeur just the way it is. It is beautiful and just the right size. Why would they want to make it bigger now that the Radiance class ships are sailing? Leave the Vision class as it is I say!!! Darlene Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional!! SeaPeaInn Posted April 27, 2004 #19 Share Posted April 27, 2004 PattyW - The ship goes to drydock once every two years to have the bottom painted and the water intakes cleaned. While they are doing doing this they sometimes use this out of service time to refurbish the public areas. Cabins are usually renovated at sea unless the ship is having a total refurbishment which usually happens every 6-8 years. Regarding another post here. They can stretch a ship in a few weeks but not in one week. Stretching seems to be out of favor these days. Plenty of large ships to go around. Michelle! Posted May 4, 2004 #20 Share Posted May 4, 2004 Hi Darlene, I hope she is done for your cruise if they decide to cut and paste! I'm sure she will be lovely! I choose Hawaii, as the ship leaves from my hometown - so as you know, I only need to worry about coming home! It will be very convenient, but my son is sad we are not going on the Granduer again! Have a great time for us, and enjoy all the fab service! Michelle! Grandeur of the Seas 11/03 Radiance of the Seas 10/

crazeekat Posted May 4, 2004 #24 Share Posted May 4, 2004 We are just off the Grandeur 1 May 04. We asked about drydocking this fall. We were told the ship will be in dry dock in Mobile Alabama for 10 days. No they were not going to extend her. She was being pulled out of the water for cleaning and repainting. She will return to New Orleans for 6 Nov 04.
