Crazy4Koko Posted March 31, 2009 #2 Share Posted March 31, 2009 I have some salad tongs that were made of local wood..they were a gift from a friend in Juneau. They look like bear claws... You can purchase gold flake suspended in water... found in alaska. Photographs..take lots of them. The scenery is breathtaking and unlike any other I've seen in pictures... Oil from the pipeline? Something made from Elk horns? or a piece of elk horn?

ellenvana Posted March 31, 2009 #12 Share Posted March 31, 2009 Hey! When we shopped in Alaska we did it at Tongas Trading Post in Ketchikan.. I don't recall the amount we had to spend (it wasn't a lot) and everything was shipped home for us free! It is a huge store and you don't have to worry about getting things home that way.. Enjoy your cruise! Alaska is the best!

umwife11 Posted March 31, 2009 #15 Share Posted March 31, 2009 I've never been on an Alaska cruise, but my parents went two years and knocked their souvenir shopping out of the park ;) The brought my husband a gorgeous suede and leather coat--very cool and not something you'd find in any kind of coat store. It had a wolf kind of 'etched' or lasered into the suede...it was gorgeous. My husband loves it...and we live in South Florida! (He's used it on a few winter vacations and chilly days since...) For me? Diamond earrings. My mom swears up and down they got a great deal on them and hey, what girl turns down diamonds? It was really nice of them :D We also got a set of those bear-claw type salad tongs. They're cool and whenever I put them out when we have company, someone says something nice... I'm sure you'll find great gifts for them!
cherylatwork Posted March 31, 2009 #16 Share Posted March 31, 2009 My mom went to Alaska a few years ago and bought my husband a beautiful “beer stein” which he collects. At the gift shop she informed the clerk she had a ten hour plane ride (including lay-overs and plane changes) to get home. She asked them to please wrap it as extremely fragile. Well the stein made it home safely but as she was presenting it to my husband, she dropped it on the floor………….good bye beautiful stein……..:( Cheryl

sewut Posted March 31, 2009 #19 Share Posted March 31, 2009 I love my ulu knife - my teen son bought a pocket knife version & loves it. I read on another thread that ulus and knives are not allowed. You could have the ulu shipped though. I use mine all the time. It's great for chopping and pizza cutting. You can get jewelry made out of gold nuggets, whale baleen, ivory and even moose "nuggets". sternfanla Posted April 1, 2009 #21 Share Posted April 1, 2009 On our trip to Alaska, my wife wanted an authentic Alaskan doll. We found out that there was only one shop who actually made them there in Alaska. This shop was located in Juneau. We paid about $140 for the doll, and we had it shipped home to us. My wife loves it.
