MDR tables

Recommended Posts

Everyone says one of the first things they do upon getting on the ship is check their table in the MDR. Is it to make sure they are at the right table size? Where are the best table locations? I just want to make sure I do what im supposed to and know what Im looking for/requesting when I make the rounds upon embarkment :D Just like the pros!

I don't know WHY that is so important to some...it's not the location of the table, but the company (your tablemates) that will make dinner special. We've NEVER gone to "check out" our table---ever!

We've been seated in almost every "quadrant" of the dining room, and our "worst" location (next to the kitchen entrance) was our most fun table ever! Great tablemates, and fast, fast service----food was always hot and special requests were a breeze.

Don't feel you have to "check" all of these things, if they really don't matter to you!

It all depends on what you want! Some people like smaller tables, some like larger. Some like a table by the window, some do not. Depending on the ship, the dining room may have different levels, and you may want a table by the railing or away from it. So if stuff like that really matters to you, you might want to put in a request beforehand for a better chance it will get taken care of.

Personally, I think I got one of the best tables on my last cruise purely by chance- I was seated at the railing of the second level right smack dab in the center on the Liberty OTS. Made for some cool pictures!

We have always gone to check out our dining room table after having lunch in the Windjammer.

It was not with the thought of asking to change it to a larger or smaller table, a better location or a window table, etc.

It was so that when the doors opened for dinner on the first night, we knew for sure what dining room level we were on and exactly where our table location was in those large rooms. We never needed an escort that way.

And we never asked or changed tables in 26 cruises.

Until the last one. I requested and they promised me a two top and it was not there. So we ate in the Windjammer the first night. Yes, I got the two top the second night for the whole 2 week cruise.

Now we are doing the My Time Dining. :D

I've NEVER checked my table upon boarding. I don't care where the table is, as long as I'm with fun, new people. I don't mind the escort on the first night. I don't remember ever having to wait to be escorted, and if I DID have to wait, it was maybe 20 seconds.

Since I've always had great tablemates, I'm glad I never changed. Who know what I would've ended up with.

One quickie though, on my last cruise (Majesty) I did a B2B. Cruise 1 was with a couple of friends who left on Friday, and cruise 2 was with my sister who embarked on Friday.

Not even THINKING of checking out where my new table was, while walking to the MDR that night I asked her what her table number was and lo and behold we were at two completely different tables! And we were in the SAME CABIN.

We told the maitre d' and probably within three minutes we had a new table, together. I was glad I DIDN'T spend the time when she first boarded to check all of this out, since it took much less time to fix that night.

The only reason I check my table location is so that I will know where to go when I enter the dining room the first evening.

With over 20 cruises, I have only once requested a table change due to size or location. On our last cruise on the AOS, we were initially assigned to a small table right at the entrance to the dining room. Due to all of the traffic, we asked to be moved elsewhere.

I just want to know where the table is so I know where to go. A little curiosity about where we've been seated is in there as well. The day of embarkation is really more or less a day to explore the ship. We're usually there early and the rooms aren't ready yet. After a quick bite in the Windjammer Cafe, it's off to explore the ship and take pictures before the public area's become to crowded. Since we drop by the dining room anyway why not see where we're supposed to be seated.

The very first thing my DH and I check upon boarding is our table in the MDR, due to the fact that after 12 cruises(all on RCCL) we have NEVER been given the kind of table we requested. Our last cruise on the LOS we traveled with our family,7 in all, our kids were at one table ,with other people, and my DH and I were at a different one, with other people. We have gotten so used to this ,it's a routine now! Our next cruise on the Explorer in July we chose MTD, we'll see how this works !!

I can understand an occasional mistake out of twelve (like my sister and me being put at different tables, which made no sense except MAYBE they got messed up because I was on the 2nd half of a B2B and she wasn't...but still...) but every one? Pretty ridiculous. I don't blame you for checking this when you embark at all!
