Chocolate on pillows

Do all cruise lines tell the cabin stewards to leave a chocolate on passengers' pillows?

Last December I cruised on the HAL ship Oosterdam. The lady I was sharing a cabin with was already in bed one night when I cam back. So, being the polite person I am, I got ready for bed in the bathroom. I closed the door behind me to get to bed, so it was pitch dark. When I woke up the next morning, my pillow and hair were smeared with chocolate. Yes, I had sleep on the bloody thing. It was hard for me to contain my anger (short-lived), but I did. I did say that I thought it was a stupid idea to put a piece of chocolate candy on people's pillows when people sometimes have to go to bed in total darkness.

This past week I sailed on the Valor, and even though I had a cabin to myself, as soon as I spotted the candy on my pillow, I tossed it in the trash can.* At dinner the subject came up, and a fellow passenger told me he had a similar incident on a cruise. He'd been drinking at the casino and just managed to navigate to his bed before passing out/falling asleep, and he also woke up to a mess of chocolate of the "present" the cabin steward had left him.

It must happen to other people as well.

You must be a very depressed person. If chocolate on the pillow annoys you, you have another thing coming. If I may add, chocolate on the pillow is intended to be a good thing. Just another way to pamper the passangers. If you hate the chocolste so much, kindly tell your room steward not to place it there. Don't worry, thats just one more chocolate for someone else to eat . ;)

Wendy, Yes it made for interesting conversation at the dinner table, and the other passengers did laugh about it. It probably happens more often than people think. Live and learn. We'll always check for chocolate before hitting the sack. :)

There was a thread about this within the past couple of months, I forget where, maybe in the Celebrity forum. The consensus was that yes, attendants always leave chocolates, and yes, people sometimes do end up with chocolate in their hair!

I think chocolates on a pillow is a great little touch that people really appreciate. For something that costs cruise lines mere pennies, it sure goes a long way to make people happy.

As for getting it in your hair, I think I would get a laugh out of it.

But then again, I have very short hair.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Maybe this experience has made you a sweeter person.

MariaCallas- The exact same thing happened to my father! My husband and I were on a cruise with my parents, I believe it was the Monarch of the Seas, probably around 1993.

Anyway, I'm sure my dad had a few drinks during the course of the day and evening, and when he and my mom returned to their stateroom, he did not notice the little chocolate on the pillow.

When and my mom woke up the next day, there was chocolate smeared everywhere! I can only imagine what my mom thought!

It's been over 10 years, and we STILL laugh about that little episode. We even tell our kids and they think it's hilarious, too! It's just one of those funny little stories to pass down! Poor dad!

I went on my first cruise 2 yrs. ago with 12 teachers. One of the teachers thought the piece of choclate on her pillow was pat a of butter! We all laughed till we thought we would die!! When she saw that on her pillow she wondered why they put butter on everyones pillow, and when we told her it was chocolate she was so embarrassed! We tease her all the time about that. I love the chocolate on my pillow! Can't wait till I cruise again on Miracle 10/2/05.

MariaCallas, I would have to ask why you would throw out a piece of chocolate. I personally love chocolate. I don't know what the big deal is. Turn on the reading light above your bed before you get in, and put the chocolate on the table.

If a person is too drunk too notice, then their problem is not chocolate in their hair, but rather that they were too drunk.

Life is short, enjoy the chocolate along the way.

Shaking my head in amazement. Everybody knows there will be chocolates on pillows on cruise ships. And, it's certainly not the steward's fault if somebody doesn't turn on a light. So somebody got 'mad' at a piece of chocolate and tossed it into the garbage can? Geez. This is just too darn silly.

One of my sisters made the same wrong assumption on our cruise last November. Never gonna let her live it down...pats of butter on the pillows?! Too funny! :D

Haven't you heard? Chocolate is now the new health craze!

I'm not a great chocolate fan, love caramel, but when I have those little chocolates on my pillow in hotels, I'm usually smart enough to hurry and eat them before hubby sees it! Can't wait to steal his on the cruise.:)

The way I look at it is if that is the only thing in life to complain about, you have a darn good life! Think of those little kids overseas that would love to have had that piece you threw in the garbage.... (you know, starving kids in Africa)
