Sheraton, Atlantis Night, Review

Just off Sensation on Sunday. Here is a little info. Hope someone can use it.

We had a great day in Nassau. It was Bahamian Independance Day so stores were closed, which was nice because we are not shoppers. We did stop at the market for my nephew to look around. It was so, so hot in there and we did not stay. It was not for us.

We followed our plan to head to Cable Beach. We took the #10 bus to the Sheraton where we rented a day room for $99 total. The room opened up straight onto the pool areas. There were very few people, not crowded at all. The price included chairs, umbrellas, towels, floats, snorkle gear and such.

We got drinks at the swim up bar and the kids ate at the Dolphin Grill. For Independance Day, the Wyndham next door had a police band and Junkanoo Celebration....all very cool.

Kids snorkled for a long time. Even though it was not like an excursion, it was included and there were rocks and sea grass that provided plenty to see. There were tons of fish and a barracuda. We had a hard time getting them in. We stayed about 5 hours, it was very, very relaxing and the beach was white and sandy.

We took the #10 back to the market. Our driver was enjoying a cold beer while he drove us and the streets were packed with people for the Fish Fry so it was slow going but we all settled in for the wild and I mean wild ride. The bus was packed. A Bahamian boy, about 15, got on beside me and both he and my own 15 year old son fell asleep. It was obvious that both had been on the beach playing all day and they both conked out. Giving thanks for a great day, I remembered how similar we all really are.

After dinner we left the boat again and took a cab to Atlantis. It was amazing as always. Since we arrived after 10:00, the DIG was free so we spent lots of time there. The kids had never seen Atlantis and we are big Dale Chihuly fans (love his ceiling at Bellagio Vegas) and he has 3 huge glass pieces at Atlantis. I won twice on slots and boys got to order drinks and gamble in a "legit" casino (the 19 and 18 year olds) so they thought it was great.

A cab ride back around 12:00 midnight and then kids to the deck party and mom and sis to bed.

If you MADE me say something negative: Food at the Dolphin Grill at Sheraton Nassau was expensive and not the greatest. Also, as I said, the market was hot and difficult. I have a friend who spends hours in there and she loves it so I know some do enjoy it.

Thanks for the review-our family will be in Nassau for a day in late August. We were thinking the same thing-getting a room at the Sheraton. Can I ask if you pre-reserved the room or just went there and asked for a dayroom? Do you know what a taxi would cost? Not sure if the bus is for me....

Did you consider the British Colonial Hilton? Just wondering if it looked like they were dredging in the harbour yet, and if it looked like the beach in front of the Hilton was disturbed by the debris or not. This was our other option-but we're worried about how the dredging will affect the water at the beach-and we like to snorkel.

At the Sheraton-was the snorkeling right off shore, or did you have to swim out a bit?

Was it good?

Thanks so much-glad you had a great time. We have two boys also-ages 11 and 15. So we want to spend a day in Nassau swimming and snorkeling on a nice clear beach. They hate to shop! Hubby wants to relax. So....Sheraton looks pretty good!

MomofBoyz-Thank you so much for posting this! We are going on 7/24 and we're doing the day pass to Sheraton. We plan on getting back to port at close to 7pm as possible so we can go to Atlantis for the remainder of the evening!

We will post once we return!

Thank you again!!:):):)

Hello everyone!

Frequent "Cruiser" here! Going on a 5 day from Galveston to Cozumel. Sail date is 9-14-09. This will be our 4th cruise with Carnival. Thinking about taking the 7 day out of Galveston to the Bahamas afterwards. I am wanting some advise, experiences, things to do in The Bahamas advise. Shore excursions, yes or no. Places to set out to on your own. Whats the best thing to to and go. The "dont miss" places etc etc.

And if you are gonna be on the cruise with us in September, lemme know!

Thanks,

Don

loved swimming with the stingrays at blackbeard's cay. 20 minute spped boat ride from dock. went to Atlantis but couldn't do anything there because we were not staying there, but that was in 03. I heard today that from a co-worker that there are hotels close to atlantis and if you book a room there, they give you 4 free passes to the atlantis water park. I would definetly be doing some research on that... :D room $189.00, passes 169.00 for adults and 129.00 for kids, you do the math... tips like that are priceless ;) Good Luck

In Nassau, do Atlantis. Cab ride is about $4 pp plus one dollar total for the bridge toll. Get a room at Atlantis (look for specials - once got ours for $129 - OMG) or at the Comfort Suites (again - got a deal there for $159). With a roon at either hotel, you can get two adult and two kid armbands which allow complete access to Atlantis - beach, water park, etc.

Or if you like to gamble, just tour the place then head to the casino. They also have high-end shops and a plethora of restaurants.

If you like history, do the walking tour of downtown. One time we hired a local guide ($25 for two hours) and it was a lot of fun.

Have also gone to Astrada Gardens and zoo - this is great if you are travelling with kids.

Plenty of things to see and do. Enjoy.

!

I emailed British Colonial with a question about children and in their answer they mentioned the dredging if I was thinking of making a reservation (we'll be there Sept. 1 and 2) . . . they didn't say how it would be affected but the fact that they mentioned it tells me they are concerned. HTH:confused:

  • 2 weeks later...

Can you tour Atlantis with and see the Dale Chihuly pieces with out paying? We are heading to Nassau for the first time so I don't know that we want to spend a great deal of time sitting on a beach- drinking but I would like to see Atlantis - dream of one day going there.

Yes, you can just catch a cab to the Atlantis resort and take your own walking tour. My husband and I did that and checked out the beautiful glass in the Casino. We ate lunch there , browsed the few shops and then took a cab back into town. You are not allowed out on the beach, but you can walk outside and enjoy the view! We now feel like we have "been there" but it was very inexpensive! :)

Thanks for the Sheraton review. How long did it take to get there and back via the bus? We are coming in, the last weekend of Sept on NCL and have a 6pm departure and I really want to make it back in time. Likely we will take the bus there and a cab back to be safe but am curious as to the distance and the cab fare if known.

We had a free night which had to be used by the end of Sept. so this option is perfect for us! Check in spend the day.....only pay for food and transport 9maybe a few cold beverages too)

Thanks!
