I was reading tonight how Dream does not have a "Sports Bar"

Well, I just knew someone would get defensive over my opinions, and wouldn't you know it would be a Texan. I've tended to discount the opinions of Texans since the last two US Presidents from our lone star state gave us The Vietnam War and The second Iraq War respectively. What is it with Texans and guns, and machismo?

you are judgmental... and you've just illustrated why you shouldn't be... sure i live in texas - partially because this state is responsible for 70% of new jobs in the NATION last year, and for the fact that it's overall a more amicable place to do business, where we're not taxed to death like in good 'ole new york...

BUT, i know your state all too well... i went to college in new york, boarding school near princeton, and was raised in central jersey... recent transplant here, by choice...

regardless, you're saying you'll discount my comments because i'm (currently) from texas... that smacks of being judgmental. perhaps you don't understand the word?...:

judg·men·tal

Function: adjective 1 : of, relating to, or involving judgment 2 : characterized by a tendency to judge harshly <judgmental prigs>

sounds a lot like your comments.

Now, because my idea is NOT TO WATCH TELEVISION, that does not mean I'm being judgemental. I'm simply stating that not watching the boob tube for one week might be a good idea. It might help refresh one's cerebral synapses; if there are any left after a diet of "reality" shows and "talent" contest shows. Not watching television has only become a radical idea over the past half century. Prior to that it was not really an issue, was it?

But why is this respondent feeling so defensive? Did I attack your religion?

FYI - i don't watch the 'reality' shows or the 'talent' contest shows... i watch a few hours of CNN a day, along with discovery, nat geo, pbs, home improvement / real estate shows, and of course... the travel channel. this is just another example of you passing narrow sighted predeterminations on others...

i'm not defensive, i was just saying 'live and let live', and don't be so judgmental...

NOT TO MENTION HOW ADDICTING IT IS AND LETS TEENS AND OTHER IMMATURE PEOPLE WASTE HOURS AND HOURS ON SUCH COMPELLING THINGS AS FACEBOOK, TWITTER AND OTHER USELESS NONSENSE.

have you no self discipline? and if the answer is yes, why can you not fathom others may posess the same?

and incidentally, facebook is not useless. it allows people (including myself) to keep in touch with friends from years and years ago who i otherwise may not be in regular contact with... if you can't see the value in that, maybe that's not the root of the problem...

But you already did judge me, and obviously you were so taken aback by my radical idea that you felt compelled to break down my posting paragraph by paragraph, so I am returning the favor. As for not judging me, by your response, you already have. And your last sentence shows that. You have decided that simply because I have a different opinion than you, that you certainly wouldn't like to have dinner with me.

nah not really - i simply stated that your comments were being judgmental - and that you shouldn't do that.

i wouldn't want to have dinner with you because you're rude, and have already made some of your feelings about others (which i am one of) clear...

such as when you stated that people who enjoy 'mediocre food' (in this case, referring to carnival cuisine), 'lardasses'... that's rough... and incredibly narrow sighted, and, yes, rude...

Do you only like to dine with people who share the same opinion as you. You must be fascinating as a conversationalist then. But then my choices of foods might repel you, so you shouldn't share our dinner table.

i love meeting new people... it's just clear that despite being entirely devoid of a real substantive conversation, you've already passed judgment on me from the little i've said...

and actually - you've done much worse. you've already let me know that you'd discount anything i had to say, because of where i live. forgive me if i'm not bubbling over with excitement for that prospect...

as long as you're making that assumption based on what i said - from your comments here, i wouldn't anticipate you'd be a fascinating conversationalist yourself - you seem more like one of those whiners that would be complaining about everything... including the 'mediocre food'... pass...

you have absolutely no basis to ascertain if your choices of food would 'repel' me... regardless, if it's something ordered from carnival - they wouldn't... i'd eat anything on the menu... i like trying new things...

Parenthetically, we usually don't like to dine with absolute strangers, which has always been one of the drawbacks of the Carnival ships (but not a deal breaker - yet). Apparently Carnival realizes that and is now starting open dining times ala NCL, so that the rest of us don't have to have dinner with a bunch of cowboys.

cowboys, really? tx is the second largest state in the country, with 23.51 million people... you really think we're all cowboys? wow, just wow

PS - i responded because you specifically targetted me in your rude drivel above. my response is above. however, this is not the place for a back-and-forth of this type, please do not respond. i have no interest in establishing a philosophical understanding or anything else - we'll agree to disagree, and nothing further. please.

Those replies are priceless. "Try reading a book" was truly excellent. Next time I go into a sports bar, I'm telling those moronic sports fans to read a book.

Here's a radical idea . . .

How about going on a cruise AND NOT WATCHING ANY TELEVISION AT ALL!!??

That would negate me checking the morning news on CNN, choosing my menu in advance from the comfort of the cabin (and not requiring me to wear my glasses to the DR), or monitoring my onboard account.

Naaaah, I think I'll pass on that idea.

How about enjoying the essence of what being at sea is all about?

I'm under the impression that most of us have our own individual feelings about that 'essence'. I have zero aspirations of becoming a seaman, or running up to the bridge to offer the Captain a few bucks to let me take the wheel for a while.:p I really enjoy going on a sailboat and have closely watched the process of making the trip possible, but if I was ever left in charge, we'd probably never reach land again. But I love doing those catamaran excursions.

For me, being at sea on a cruise offers a slow means of transporation from point A to point B to point C, with lots of available activities, quality entertainment, exceptional cuisine, and permission to involve myself in (or remove myself from) any vice I so choose.

My chosen 'essence' would make some yawn, and others cringe.

Here's an idea: How about not taking on your cruise vacation any of the following: Cell phone, blackberry, laptop computer. How about NOT looking at any sort of screen showing images for an entire week. Do y'all think you could handle it, or would it be painful, like some heroin junkie going cold turkey?

You asked an honest question, and I'll offer an honest answer. I could do without the phone (which is turned off and in the safe after sailaway), and I don't even own a laptop (to the shock of all my technology buds). But if I didn't have the internet available to me while on a cruise, be it either onboard or in a port stop, I would not be cruising. It is a must for me. It provides a connection between me and my best friend in the world, even if for just a very few minutes a day. Naturally, there is no typed messages or VOIP conversations involved, but those webcams focused on my dog's play, eating, and sleeping areas, are invaluable to keeping me happy on an already-enjoyable cruise.

So I'm gonna turn down that suggestion, too.

Enjoy your vacation in what ever way you like.

Oh, I definitely intend to . . . every single time. And I hope you'll enjoy your style of vacations, too. That way, we're all happy in a Win-Win situation.

Bill, if I may offer one brief observation. . . . On more than one cruise review on these boards, you've mentioned your personal choice to exercise in the onboard gym, and for that I offer sincere applause. Kudos!! But you also mention enjoying some indoor equipment that is plugged in. Seems like a technological preference to using the outdoor jogging track, which offers a great view of the sea and all its 'essence'.

I dont know how many of you saw this on John Heald's blog, but thought Id post his comment about the Dream sports bar for those who are interested in the details:

Tim Kriebel, MCPO US Navy (Ret) Asked:

John: Please Reply:

Does the Carnival Dream have a Sports Bar???? I have scoured the deck plans on Carnival’s site and do not see any mention of a Sports Bar. What’s the real scoop?

John Says:

Hello Tim

Your Carnival Dream does not have a specific sports bar as we have on the Destiny and Conquest class ships but it does have full sports coverage in the casino bar. This remember is open plan and behind the bar we have four huge plasma screens ready to show the Miami Heat winning the 2010 NBA finals. The Casino Bar, The Ocean Plaza and the Lobby will be fighting each other to be the hub of the ship……..wonder who will win.

Thanks for writing in Tim and my best wishes to you and the family.

John

that doesnt sound terrible...

If you go on Carnival website and click on the dream, I think it's hot spots on the ship, it says that you can catch your favorite games there at the casion bar. I wonder if it will be wall to wall TV's like the Game Beting areas in Vegas. HaHa!
