cruisers103 Posted August 13, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2009 What about buying cheese in Aruba and taking it home by plane? (Family gift request.) Has any one done this? What do you do about customs?
kitty9 Posted August 13, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2009 The cheese must be hard, cured cheese only, no soft cheeses like brie. You must present the cheese for inspection to determine if it's legal. You must also declare the products on your Custom's form. Do not pack it in your luggage as the dogs who sniff the bags will find it and it could cause you more trouble.
Bonnie J. Posted August 13, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Our cruise buddies had no problems getting cheese and bringing it home from Aruba- but we didn't fly. She just carried it off in her carryoff bag. Would think you could carry it this way if you fly.
michmike Posted August 13, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Do you purchase whole wheels? Or do you cut the cheese? (sitting off to the side looking innocent)
kadey Posted August 13, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 13, 2009 We bought chunks of cheese in Aruba last Jan.It was a small shop off on a little ally. The guy vacuum packed each cheese individually. We had no problem bring it home on our flight.-Kade

michmike Posted August 13, 2009 #7 Share Posted August 13, 2009 aruba and curacao (along with bonaire as well I guess) were all once part of the dutch west indies.. so a strong dutch influence there. Hence the cheese production.
Treven Posted August 13, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 13, 2009 I think you'd be better off having the store ship the cheese home, i.e. FedEx or UPS. This is what I do when purchasing Tortuga rum cakes; I have the store ship my 3 or 4 cakes to my office.
marco Posted August 13, 2009 #9 Share Posted August 13, 2009 I'd go either on line or call US Customs and ask. However, we've never had a problem bringing cheese home from Italy or Holland. If you are taking the cruise out of Fla and then flying home, the issue is going to be when you go through customs in Fla. If you are then flying home domestic from Fla, the airline is out of the loop.

Our Friends purchase an entire wheel of Gouda from Aruba & declare it on their Customs form.. They always share it with their Friends..It's delicious!:):):) Cheers..:)Betty
