brown_eyedgal Posted October 27, 2009 #26 Share Posted October 27, 2009 LOL - nope, both AF. :D What killed me was the eyeroll and flounce away I got when I said I didn't know (since we were in the other dining room...). But I have been talked into wearing my uniform on the 2nd of our 2 upcoming cruises. *sigh* We're going with my parents and I deploy for a year 2 weeks after we get home, sooooooo. Yeah. And congrats on the 10th anniversary! I'm sure you'll have a great time! And yes, you'll get some great pics I'm sure! :) AF...what rank is your DH where they call him senior? I have no clue about AF stuff like that. In the Navy a senior is an E-8. I am still debating wearing mine. I won't wear it for the vow renewal, but maybe for formal night. hummm...not sure yet. It would definitely bedifferent...

DH was also an E-8 - Senior Master Sergeant in the AF. :) And as far as wearing your uniform on formal night, I swore I wouldn't do it again after last time, and it DOES take up a lot of room in the suitcase. But since we're driving this time, I don't really have an excuse. You could always take it, and a backup dress for formal night and see how you feel once you're on board... Well that makes sense...;) I totally should have googled it, but I forgot...:D Yea...I am not sure what I will do. I might just end up wearing the dress I will wear for the vow renewal for formal night too. Thanks for the help! I will probably end up flipping a coin...;)
Poomah Posted November 5, 2009 #29 Share Posted November 5, 2009 THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU That being said wear your uniform with all the polish and pride you can muster. You have earned the right to do so and the rest of us salute you. I think it would be so neat if Carnival would designate one of the formal nights as "uniform night" and all those wishing to participate would dress accordingly. Then, all of the military personnel and their families could be escorted into the dining room at the same time (to an overwhelming standing ovation from all of us) Not something the majority of those serving would ask for but something I would more than willingly give. Have a great cruise and THANK YOU!
lacruiser Posted November 5, 2009 #30 Share Posted November 5, 2009 What kind of shoes does your mess dress require?? Do they have to be flat -- or pumps, maybe? And I second the vote of wearing the uniform one night and the sequins (or whatever) the second -- and if I see you, I'll buy the next round! :D

I have never worn my skirt with my uniform, but if I did it would have to be pumps. Since I wear pants with my uniform I always end up wearing regular shoes. I don't believe I will be bring the uniform, but I still have 6 or so days to decide...;)

gatorjax Posted November 20, 2009 #33 Share Posted November 20, 2009 Going on my first cruise in January. I never considered wearing my uniform until I saw this post. I am in the Coast Guard reserves. Are military uniforms common place on cruises?

I am in the Coast Guard reserves. Are military uniforms common place on cruises? Depends on the cruise, really. We've seen anywhere from 5-10 other people wearing uniforms on a cruise to our last one on the Legend last week, where DH and I were the only ones in uniform (he's retired, I'm still AD - 17 years now). That cruise was the nail in the coffin for me ever wearing my mess dress on a cruise again. First cruise was the "where is the dining room" question, and this one was actually worse. People would thank DH for his service and ignore me, while I was right next to him. He even had a guy buy him a drink for his service. Let me reiterate - right. next. to. him. Even my mom got pissed off at the different reactions! Even though it's the 21st century, I just don't think people comprehend women in uniform. :(

I think you're right that most people don't understand women in uniform. But your sacrifice is just as great.
