Aplmac- I bought the camera in St. Maarten- but not the d90. I went with a Canon T2i and a lens to die for- but I didn't bring it out until my next island. These are a few shots from my old digital- they can't compare to yours! Dawn Beach Edited April 22, 2010 by MDSue

Aplmac Posted April 27, 2010 Author #256 Share Posted April 27, 2010 Having looked through all the stunning photos in this thread, I am eagerly looking forward to our visit in early August and promise to post some photos later Thanks for your promise of pics to come. ........................................... Perhaps the biggest single tip I can give ppl, re. taking nice photos is to wait for the sun to come out!! OK so there's a great scene before you, and you get the camera out. But you realize the sun's behind a cloud, and the light contrast is rubbish. Look up to the sky, like I'm often seen doing  to see how big the cloud is... Is it worth waiting the extra 2 mins. for the sun to come out and light the scene? or do you just forget about it? Very often, if you'll just wait 30 secs. or so, the sun comes from behind the cloud, bathes the scene in light and the picture is 10 times better than it was a minute ago! I make this post because I've seen so many potentially great pics submitted -in low-contrast lighting conditions with dull sea-colour! Wait for the sun! . Dawn Beach ===> Just beautiful, because the sun was out!! Ain't nothing wrong with your pics. At least you got them with the sun shining on the scene! ;) .............................................. Now...I have a pretty good idea about your T2i DSLR, since I looked it up on Google Images but I'm a lot more interested in what you describe as "a lens to die for" I'm hoping you'll satisfy our curiosity by expanding on that? Remember that the lens takes the picture: the camera only 'remembers' it. That's why we spend our real money on good glass building up a collection of neat lenses that goes with us -thru our lifetime- from camera-body to camera-body(they're sooo replaceable, every few years). That's how the pros think. The amateurs concentrate on the camera(supplied with a rather average lens). ____________________________________________ Btw, it's the same thing with drummers: we build up an eclectic collection of cymbals, which go with us from drumset to drumset, over the years but no-one ever tells you that! . MDSue Posted April 27, 2010 #258 Share Posted April 27, 2010 Aplmac- I'm definitely an amateur- but I want to learn to take pics comparable to yours- I always look forward to your excellent shots. The camera package that I bought was the T2i with an EF-S 18-135 IS lens. The bonus lens I bought was Canon's EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM. I wanted a telephoto lens that was capable of action shots [we go see the Blue Angels air show every year]. This was the lens the saleperson recommended. The lens cost me as much as the camera! I realize I could have probably bought a non-name brand lens for less- but this was a once in a lifetime splurge for me So far, I'm delighted with the camera and lens- but I have a lot of learning to do. I'm already looking to choosing another lens- a smaller one- maybe a macro?- but first I'm going to take some time to learn the ropes first. So far, I'm sticking with mostly automatic settings. Any suggestions- where do I go from here?

Happy Cruiser 6143 Posted November 12, 2010 #260 Share Posted November 12, 2010 Dear Aplmac, Thank you very much for posting these picture threads! I just discovered them several days ago and have spent hours perusing them. To the bandwidth critic, I say BAH HUMBUG! It is so helpful to have the narrative and the pictures together. I am off on a two-week "exotic Southern Caribbean" cruise next Saturday and now I know what to expect at Antigua, Barbados, & St. Maarten. (We're not going to Dominica.) I have read umpteen guidebooks and the ferry stuff was still Greek to me. But now I get it, having seen your wonderful pictures. If you ever start conducting island photo safaris, I'm all over it! Thanks again! If I get any good shots, I'll come back and post them, although they will pale in comparison to yours. I don't even have a DSLR. But you're tempting me. This thread needs to be woken up, every now and then and I'm hoping it'll come alive again -particularly when I get back from an upcoming cruise on Carnival Victory in April. :) We get to Sint Maarten....I think it's April 16th... ..so you can look out for a few new ones anytime after that. Meanwhile, folks are free to add their pics to this thread! .
Rare BillOh Posted March 16, 2011 #262 Share Posted March 16, 2011 Dear Aplmac, Thank you very much for posting these picture threads! I just discovered them several days ago and have spent hours perusing them. To the bandwidth critic, I say BAH HUMBUG! Agreed, i do in home PC repair and more than 300 of my customers are senior citizens and now all but one has a broadband internet connection. If you are bothered by bandwidth issues, avoid threads marked PICTURES! :) I see many of these pics are a year or two old, but I enjoyed them, I'm no tired of this midwestern winter and these pictures helped. About 50 days and I will be here!
