Good day... Looking for suggestions where to stay the night before our cruise in October. We have a later flight into Newark so are looking at staying near the airport and taking a cab/ car service into the cruise port in the morning.... Any recommendations??? Would like a hotel near restaurants for dinner the night we arrive... Many thanks!

Cape Liberty? Exact date? Budget? Number of people? Double, Queen, king bed?

Hotel restaurants are limited or nonexistent unless you stay on International Blvd, Elizabeth, where your choices are IHOP, Ruby Tuesdays, Applebee's, Johnny Rockets, or the mall food court.

Our date is October 8, not familiar with the area but flying into Newark , budget under 200.00 per night

Are you sailing on Breakaway? That leaves from the Manhattan Cruiseport, so you have to make arrangements to get into Manhattan. Are you taking a cruise transfer the following day, a car service, train/cab, or airport bus/cab to the Manhattan Cruiseport?

How late does your flight arrive?

Hotels can be found, but food could be an issue if you're coming in late.

You started a thread and received a suggestion from Carol (138east) last month:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2364060

You said then you were cruising on the Breakaway on Oct 9. and needed a room for Oct. 8. Are your plans still the same? Did you check out what Carol suggested then?

Thanks Paul. I didn't remember that the OP had asked before. My original advice still applies. Late night food could be an issue.

Our plans have changed actually... We get into Newark @ 7:30 pm... Originally we thought of staying in the city the night before the cruise but have sinced decided to just stay in Newark and get a car service into the cruise terminal on Sunday morning ... We are two couples so will need a room with two double beds for the one night, and would like transportation from the airport to the hotel... Thank you

Look at LastMinuteTravel for the Airport Hilton at about $137 tax included cancellable up to 3 days ahead. You will be dining at the Hilton.

Hotel shuttles are free, but you have to take yourselves and your luggage on the free Airtrain to the P4 station to get the shuttle.

$250 will be a very very tight budget for both downtown Boston and Manhattan. Are you going to have to lodge your car as well? Parking in both cities can run $50-60/ night.

New York -2 nights Sep 7-9 - 3 adults

where are you staying the night of Sep 9?

Boston - 3 nights Sep 10-13 - 2 adults

Are you renting a car for a week? Aside from driving from New York to Boston, what are you going to use the car for? It's a huge liability in both New York and Boston.

Hotwire could be your friend in Boston. What do you want to see in Boston? Do you want to see anything outside of town where you would need a car?

What NY airport are you flying into?

Please provide more details.

We haven't bought tickets for flight to New York, coming from Southern California and are flexible. Staying in New York 7th, 8th, and 9th. Driving to Boston because we thought we might want to do some sightseeing along the way. Would consider staying somewhere along the way for one night but would like to be in Boston for two nights. We've been to Boston before just overnight so probably want to walk Freedom Trail, see Fenway Park, Faneuil Hall and maybe Kennedy Library. We don't need a car in Boston, will do whatever sightseeing we want to do outside the city and then drop off car. Thanks for your help.

The best deal I can find for you in downtown Boston is on LastMinuteTravel.com for the Back Bay Hilton for $235/night plus tax for about $805 for three nights. This will put you in a popular Back Bay area with restaurants, shopping, and transportation access to do the sightseeing you are interested in.

Will look around at New York.

That's a great deal and the Back Bay Hilton is in a wonderful location and has good sized rooms. Just remember parking is an extra fee probably $40-50 per night.

I can't find anything in Manhattan for Sep 7-10 for 3 people in your price range that I could recommend. You're going to have to up your $250 budget or stay in NJ.

Don't book your airfare until you resolve the hotel situation.

What kind of beds do you require for 3 people?

Two examples in NJ (flying into Newark) would be the Newark Penn Station Hilton for $209+ tax on LastMinuteTravel (2 double beds) or Candlewood Suites in Jersey City for $219 + tax for a queen and a sofa bed. The Hilton has the NJ transit train and PATH directly across the street for access to midtown or downtown NY and Candlewood has walking access to PATH to go to either midtown or downtown NY. The Hilton has a free airport shuttle, but you would have to spend $55-65 for a cab to Candlewood. Candlewood is right across the Hudson from lower Manhattan.

Thanks for info, another question. If you have experience with the website last minute, how long are the prices good? Should we book today?

I've only booked once with them and had a good experience. I did book last minute to deal with a precruise snow event sailing from Cape Liberty. They have a liberal cancellation policy of up to 72 hours ahead, so IMO there is no down side to booking other than your credit card being charged now. http://m.lastminutetravel.com//PageFaq.aspx

What are you deciding to do?

Probably reserve the Hilton properties for both cities. Not sure adult daughter would want to sleep on a sofa bed. Will rent the car for one day and drive to Boston and get 3 day pass for transportation in Boston. Thanks

Newark Hilton - From Newark Penn Station you take NJ Transit to go to New York Penn Station in midtown Manhattan ($5.50/pp) or PATH to go to World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan ( $2.75/pp) The hotel connected to the station by a skywalk.

http://www.panynj.gov/path/maps-schedules.html

Boston does not offer a 3 day transportation pass. You need to get a plastic Charlie Ticket so you can pay $2.25/ride instead of $2.75
