Dress code in Rome

Hi there I will be visiting Rome on my Cruise in September. I know there is a dress code for visiting the Vatican. It states no bare shoulders for ladies can anyone tell me if a sleeveless dress is appropriate for women???

There are diagrams outside churches which show what is acceptable

basically cover shoulders and knees

a sleeveless dress wont pass but as long as it goes past the knees if you take along a lightweight shawl to cover shoulders that will work

Personally I'd think a sleeveless dress would not be appropriate after reading the guidelines so just in case, bring a scarf or something you could put on during your visit to the Vatican. Just my opinion.

The official Vatican web site says the following about visiting the Papal basilicas:

Long pants for men and either pants or skirts below the knee for women, covered shoulders for all.

A sleeveless dress may be fine, the problem is that these words are interpreted by human beings and what is in line for one person may be out of line for another. I would assume that a sleeveless dress does cover the shoulders, but I'm not the one making the decision. As said above, a large scarf or lightweight shawl can be your fallback option.

Thank you all for your replies. The suggestion about the scarf is a great idea. If it is a hot day I will ware my sleeveless dress and I just so happen to have a huge scarf that will match. I always ware my dresses well below the knee I will be 65 years old soon. LOL I am in the process of packing for my 20 day trip from the US...so excited I could just burst!!!
