robber12 Posted August 5, 2012 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2012 Hi all. My suitcases are 161 cm in total (L+W+H). KLM airlines is 158 cm in total. Will I be ok to use my suitcases or should I buy som smaller ones and do the airlines measure each suit case. Thanks a lot. Rob..
CapeCodCruiser Posted August 5, 2012 #2 Share Posted August 5, 2012 They do not measure but they have a "sizer" it must fit in. Its a stand with a frame in which you place your bag - your bag must go all the way in. Your bag being only 3cm off overall will most likely fit. We have had to rearrange things in a bag at the airport to make it fit before!
reallyitsmema Posted August 5, 2012 #3 Share Posted August 5, 2012 They have a sizer for carryons. For checked luggage, they will measure if they think the bag is oversized. There is a very large fee for an oversized bag, check with your particular airline. I would buy a new suitcase.
Arusha Posted August 5, 2012 #4 Share Posted August 5, 2012 When I flew out of Amsterdam on KLM in February, they didn't measure carry-ons, but the head flight attendant yelled at a passenger for carrying on more than one bag in Economy. Quite a scene! The Captain had to settle the argument. As long as the carry-on fits through the screening machine, you should be OK. I don't think 3 cm will make a difference, but if you are concerned, buy a new bag.
Arusha Posted August 5, 2012 #5 Share Posted August 5, 2012 Oops, sorry, you're talking about checked bags. Yes, you might as well buy a new bag, so KLM doesn't yell at you. :)
kitty9 Posted August 5, 2012 #6 Share Posted August 5, 2012 They will be able to visually see that your bags aren't within their requirements and they will charge you oversize baggage fees. On some airlines, those fees could add up to over $100 a bag.
grandma*knows*best Posted August 6, 2012 #7 Share Posted August 6, 2012 Airlines can and do measure (and weigh) checked bags (if that is what you are referring to). If your bags don't meet their allowed size, you will be charged an over sized baggage fee. It's cheaper to buy a new suitcase.

pdmlynek Posted August 7, 2012 #10 Share Posted August 7, 2012 I’d say risk it. In Europe they are strict on carry ons, but I do not think that they measure the dimensions of the luggage.
SadieN Posted August 8, 2012 #11 Share Posted August 8, 2012 I’d say risk it. In Europe they are strict on carry ons, but I do not think that they measure the dimensions of the luggage. If the bag looks too big they will measure them and they do weigh them.
amberben Posted August 8, 2012 #12 Share Posted August 8, 2012 I am having trouble with a new carry on suitcase I have bought. All the flights companies give a larger size except Virgin..! Even Ryan Air and Easy jet let you take ones 4cms bigger. I dont know if it is worth trying to get through with it. ? Has anyone else been on a virgin flight with this problem.?? Talisker92 Posted August 8, 2012 #13 Share Posted August 8, 2012 The OP is asking about the checked suitcase not a carry on. We have traveled extensively on many airlines, both foreign and domestic and have never had our our suitcase measured. We have a luggage scale, however to make sure the weight is OK. The size difference of 1.8% is imperceptible. IMO, there is more of a danger of putting too much weight in the suitcase than the size.
