shinycruiser Posted July 24, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 24, 2014 Does anyone know the dress code to go into the mosques in Istanbul? I know I have to cover my head, and trousers or a skirt below the knees. I am not sure if I have to cover all of my arms, or just above the elbow. Thanks
Ontariotrekker Posted July 24, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 24, 2014 It's been awhile for me but I wore slacks, a top that had short sleeves to the elbows and carried a scarf in my day bag just in case. Istanbul is not as strict as some of the cities you would go to further inland but, like any religious building, it's always good to be respectful. Try checking out Journeywoman.com for more current info. Istanbul is amazing.. enjoy. Shar
happy v Posted July 24, 2014 #3 Share Posted July 24, 2014 As far as I can remember it's just your head, and I'm sure you have to take your shoes off.
Julessmiles Posted July 24, 2014 #4 Share Posted July 24, 2014 Whatever you wear; the mosques provide scarves & covers & skirts for you to wear so if you have not got the appropriate clothing then don't worry. It had been August the times we have been there so too hot to wander around the city in anything more than a cool dress which is what my daughter & I wore both times. We were given scarves to wear over our heads & skirts to wear over our dresses.
4Mast Posted July 24, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 24, 2014 A bit of advice sometimes given: Do not leave your shoes at the door-take a plastic bag to carry them in. Its usually hair covered and shoes off.

Tiggertastic Posted July 29, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 29, 2014 there is a line to take off your shoes, grab a plastic bag and carry them in the bag with you We covered shoulders and knees and I carried a scarf just in case
legogirl Posted July 31, 2014 #8 Share Posted July 31, 2014 As long as you are reasonably dressed and have your head covered you will be fine. We went independently this February. It is a beautiful mosque, hope you enjoy it.
