Does Bermuda truly hate big guys?

I'm a big man. 6'4" tall, 325 lbs. you want me to anchor your tug of war team, trust me. I have looked at many excursions, both from Celebrity Cruise Line and privately chartered and I can't hardly do any of them. Jessie James for example has a 250lb weight limit, most of the excursions, including shopping trips from the boat are 250 or 300. Does anyone know, do they really stick with this rule, am I going to have to just sit in my cabin because no one will allow big guys to play?

The reason is insurance. But you don't have to do any excursion cruise line or private. In Bermuda it is better not too. They have a very good transport system. So you can do almost everything. If you want an island tour you can do a taxi tour, or a minibus tour that you pick up outside the ship in the transportation zone. I have been to Bermuda 11 or 12 times and the only cruise ship excursion I did was snorkeling off a boat. It was actually better snorkeling at Tobacco Bay. I have seen plenty of guys your size getting around Bermuda.

This thread is pretty timely, I just today booked a catamaran sun set champagne cruise trip on HAL out of Hamilton and couldn't believe I had to enter me and my travel mates weight in the online form. It's a sun set cruise, I had never seen that in all the cruises that I have taken. Not even when I went to Alaska and took a helicopter flight did we have to fill out the form ahead of time. Also now many of the excursions have age restrictions as well and I'm not talking children I'm talking seniors past a certain age are not allowed to go. So much for personal responsibility.

Insurance company requirements.

 

The age limit requirements burn me now. I don't think those should be. I know lots of seniors who could easily do those excursions they have been restricted out of. Since I usually am DIY or book private it won't matter much to me though.

 

They might not have had a form in Alaska but they did have weight limits. They did on my flight.

We did the Devils Island snorkle tour last week on the Summit, lots of fun. My son is bigger than you are and we had no problem other than they did not have flippers for size 17 shoe. I agree though it is just CYA by the lawyers and tour operators.

On this particular tour we were out for about three hours, snorkeled, they had kayaks and then then let us jump off the top of the boat which was a lot of fun. Great crew.

We noticed the same thing if you are over 250lb you're not able to do an excursion. That was fine by us we always did our own thing anyways. Why pay $$$ for a snorkeling trip when you can see TONS of sea life on your own. We bought a set of snorkel gear from Costco ($30 each set) included everything including a mesh carrying bag and just snorkel right from the beaches Horseshoe Bay, Tobacco Bay, even Snorkel Park...wasn't expecting much from SP but turns out there is a TON of sea life there. We even saw an octopus there! So there is fun to be had for bigger guys and gals ;)

Also I contacted the Ecotour that I've seen on here because they also had a weight limit listed because we are considering doing that and was told if you are in good health they would take larger passengers. So you could try contacting them if you wanted an excursion experience. :)

My husband is a bit larger than you are and we were able to do the helmet diving with no problem. We booked it privately on our last trip there. We did have a health form to fill out and if you have certain conditions (like high blood pressure) you had to bring a letter from your doctor.

It was a great experience! We went in May when the water temps were still chilly and there was even wetsuits that were large enough.

We will do this again when we return to Bermuda!

Skip the over priced excursions. Bermuda is truly a place where you can do any of the things they advertise for far, far less. It is all about the insurance. Try walking through Blue Hole park and swimming in the caves. You can get there by bus and walk in (not strenuous at all).

I ended up privately booking a catamaran sail and snorkel with Restless Naitive and a Jet Ski tour with Somerset water sports. They had a max weight limit for the jet ski, but no individual one (you could ride with more than one person). They didn't ask for weight or anything. Both were great. Also did the crystal cave independently - ferry to Hamilton then bus to the caves.
