For us the answer is it depends on the port.

In general we would stay on the ship. However, if the port city was a very long distance from the ship and we had close to two days in port (e.g.. arrive early morning the first day and leave late afternoon/early or late evening the next day we have stayed overnight at a hotel before.

From a SS point of view you always sleep on board.

The only reasons you would not sleep on board are

a) you booked a two-days excursion (like to Moscow from St. Petersburg or to Beijing from Shanghai)

b) you decide that you want to stay some place else for the night and book it yourself.
