Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

The difference between enforcing towels on chairs and enforcing people taking up machines without playing is $$.

If people who want to gamble can't gamble because all seats are taken by people not playing (or making only the pretense of playing), I'm sure it will be addressed.

And just what do you consider to be "the pretense of playing"?

It is absolutely NOT a war and glad someone else sees that

It is just about common sense and logic and safety and health

I never thought it as a win or lose situation for either side or a war, until mpk218 threw down the gauntlet. Pretty sad when someone has to think of this as war and probably is planning on how to get back at the other side, no wonder there will never be a compromise.

I agree. I think if NCL sees that the revenue is down in the casino, they will address the reasons. Since they have cameras watching our every move, they will easily be able to find out what the issues are. If they see that it is because of smokers taking up chairs and not gambling or smokers coming in and having 1 cigarette and playing a few cents a hand, just so they can smoke and then leaving while other players are not able to find a seat or machine, they will probably have to come up with an alternative plan.

"Odd, since we played !¢ and 2¢ machines on the Breakaway, Gem, Jewel, Star and Dawn. :D " --Quoted from peg014 (couldn't get the quote button to work:confused:)

I was just on the Jewel in October and while there were 1 and 2 cent machines they had a minimum bet of 40 cents. I haven't seen a machine where you could bet just a penny per bet in years.

I saw this posted, not here on CC. The poster gave me permission to repost. There was a lot of discussion about it after she posted.

Just recently I came back from a cruise on Breakaway and had a fantastic time! I would like to point out something though since it was big talk about a week or so ago about the smoking policies! I witnessed on balconies above mine who were smokers throwing their cigarette butts off the balcony some landing right on the ship which can cause big risk for thousands of people's safety! So I will say that I am happy that the policies will be changing. People are very careless and this is why policies and rules are implemented. It's not because they want us to become upset or raged. It's because the safety and well being of all cruisers! I wouldn't have been a happy cruiser if someone's cigarette landed on my balcony. A little respect goes a long way. Just FYI they also enforce those out of hand with drinking so it's not one thing being left out ! Thanks ncl for another great cursing experience.

The E cigs look identical to a real cig. So in order to avoid mistaken identity or a flood of calls to the pursers that someone 25 balconies down is smoking they banned them. They still expel nicotene and other chemicals into the air.

There are other types of vapor apparatus that many people use that do not look like a cig at all.

True quality electronic cigarettes look nothing like a real cigarette. Cheap ones and some disposables that you see at your local store resemble them just to entice buyers into thinking theay are exactly the same.

Comments like this make those non-smokers, like me, that didn't complain (the only thing I've complained about is the flavored e-cigarettes that smell awful), feel that maybe I should switch sides and join the complainers, since some smokers obviously think it is now war. I don't think those that complained, whould ever what to compromise after reading your words.

I believe the only reason a war is breaking out is due to the non-smokers got what they wished for and still are not happy. Most just like to complain whether they have been affected in the past or not. Now they are realizing that even they will suffer such as in the casinos or on the public decks as a result of their actions even worse than have been experienced on the balconies.

LOL - For E-cig folks that plan to use their orderless devices - (hubby included) - Sadly - All I can hear in my head when reading some of these posts is Barney Fife on Mayberry screaming - Citizen's Arrest... Citizen's Arrest...

Lmao best post of the entire thread. So fitting haha

And I am sure there will be a number of non-smokers spending a good portion of their cruise searching out the offenders. The same who sneak a peek around the balcony dividers. Seen that a few times. Next will be the "sorry I thought this was my room" when they try to police each stateroom.

Bingo...You got smoking banned on balconies. The compromise is smoking areas on deck and the casino. Now you are not happy with that compromise you want smoking to be banned there as well so Yeah at this point us smokers feel like we are in a war because the non-smokers won't compromise AT ALL

Yes I agree. Some not most however continue to complain even though smoking has been banned on balconies which I think was their biggest complaint and the casino. Going forward after November 1st will be other complaints for other areas. They will continue with rants and raves. It's a no win situation for smokers unless the smoker makes adjustments and compromises as I plan on doing.

Have you started using "non smokers" as a general term of abuse outside of this forum yet?

I totally agree with the post that you quoted. I've never had a problem with smoke on board, am not convinced by the assumption that the casino will now be much smoker than it currently is, and hope that smokers are accommodated as much as possible in the future. However, I've been following dipping out of this discussion on and off over the past couple of weeks and the most notable thing to me is this constant reference to "non smokers" as some type of lowlife who want nothing more than ruin others holidays, and take away any choice they have.

Generalisations like that really do nothing at all for any valid arguments you may have.

What term should then be used? Those which refrain from smoking (formerly referred to as non-smokers) state that smokers are rude, blow smoke in their face, smell and throw butts off their balconies. Prior to e-cigs I smoked on my balcony with the utmost consideration to my fellow cruisers with all ashes and butts going into a half filled water bottle for cleanliness and safety. Would never smoke indoors in a casino or anywhere even if permitted. Even I do not like the smell. I have on 2 cruises even had neighbors shocked that I smoked since they had no idea from their adjoining balcony. With that being said, I am being grouped in with the few inconsiderate jerks who do those appalling things so please do not group us with those. Thank you.

Where exactly do I group anybody?

Still, you've missed my point nicely. On with it then, carry on your battle. Nobody wins though, you do realise that don't you?

The ONLY reason? And your snide comments have NOTHING to do with it, right? It takes 2 sides, you know.

Now that you have gotten what you want with the banning of smoking on balconies you more than anyone on this thread are already realizing you created a more serious problem of added smoke in the casino and on open decks. Your posts have created more backlash than any others. Hope I am never next to you as I am sure you are one of those balcony peekers.

Would you prefer the term "whiny non-smokers" to differentiate between non-smokers that don't care and non-smokers that cry about every little perceived injustice?

Me more than anyone, huh? Well, comprehension hasn't exactly been your strong suit in this thread. What I said in this post is exactly opposite of your claim. Pay special attention to the last sentence....

Other cruise lines already restrict indoor smoking to casinos only and from what I have seen, no, they do not kick people out who are just in there having a smoke.

Apply a little common sense here, people. Not everyone in a casino is actively gambling. Do they kick people out who are just standing there watching a table, or watching a friend at a slot machine, or watching a game on one of the tv's? Of course not. And they're not going to kick out smokers either. There's no reason to.

Besides, casino have bars. Usually, the smokers just congregate in that area. And also, from what I have seen, the casino isn't even usually the go-to place for a smoke anyways. It's usually the outdoor promenade deck. If you're going somewhere to smoke because you can't do it on your balcony, why would you go to the casino and not the promenade deck? Again, common sense. The casino will be no more worse or better than it already is.

Personally, I'd just prefer everyone to get along, and stop the pathetic sniping, but obviously I understand that won't happen.

Anyway, as everyone on here is just too focussed on everything having to be an argument, I'll just leave you all to it for now. It is actually more enjoyable to just read the thread, and have a good laugh at all of you in your trenches having your little war. It really is very entertaining. :)

Hey, there are rude people on both sides and yes there are inconsiderate smokers that blow smoke in someone's face and throw butts off the ship, just as there are rude non-smokers who cough or wave at smoke. BUT WE ALL DON'T FIT INTO THOSE TWO BOXES. There are considerate smokers and there are considerate non-smokers, but you seem to place all the non-smokers into one nice little box....well, we all don't fit in there. But with the latest rhetoric, you might have positioned a lot of non-smokers so that they would fit into the box you want them to be in. Consideration goes both ways, I was always taught you can get more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.

BTW, I don't think there will be any more smoke in the casino, the issue will be that possibly those of us that like to gamble will not be able to find a seat or a machine. Won't bother me, might bother NCL who is paying almost 100% of my 11 day November cruise and probably expects me to be gambling like I normally do, because I can always go to Las Vegas to spend my gambling dollars.

I pretty much gave up arguing last week. Better off throwing in a statement now and then rather than trying to fight. Been there done that.

Oh yes, it isn't a subject that is worth arguing. What is very amusing though is that some people now seem to have reached the stage where they can't recognise that a post may not be part of the argument.
