HONGKONG - Where can we leave our luggage for the day?

We will be arriving in HGK at 8:00 a.m. and our flight only departs after 23:00 in the evening. Where can we leave the luggage once we are off the ship for the day and then pick it up before heading off to the airport?

They have check-in desks at the Hong Kong & Kowloon Metro stations. All major airlines have a desk, and you can check-in up to 24hrs before. You just need to buy a ticket for the direct train to the airport from either station. It will cost HK$90-100/£9-10/US$6-7 depending which station you use.

Newport Dave

many thanks, this is perfect for our needs.

No problem, we used it a few years ago. It's such an excellent service it makes your last day there into a full easy sightseeing day with no problems. When we went to get the train to the airport at 2030hrs it was virtually empty so had choice of seats.

we used ship transfer to Kowloon station and bought the airport express tickets, checked our baggage, and received our boarding passes. We went up the escalator to Elements Mall, where there were lockers - I believe 3 sizes - to store any hand luggage, After that. we grabbed a taxi and went on our way sightseeing, visting Hisotry Museum, and came back to pick up hand luggage and catch the express train. Very easy.

Hello MJN,

We are on the same cruise as yours, but are staying in Hong Kong, before spending four days in Taiwan, so your question is not really relevant to us.

However I wonder if there is anyone out there with a definitive and up to date answer on the availability of taxis at Kai Tak Cruise terminal. The terminal website implies a scarcity on a cruise turn round day. From checking the schedule, there will only be one ship, with around 380 passengers in Kai Tak on that day.

There have been old posts from a couple of years ago, when Kai Tak first opened of inefficiency, long queues and more than a two hour wait.

I would be grateful for any answers, unfortunately we will have too much luggage with us to contemplate any other alternatives.

Kindest regards

and see you at the meet & mingle MJN

We used the Kowloon Station lockers to store our carryon bags after we checked our luggage at the station (you can check 24 hours in advance). We then took a taxi with another couple to a museum for three hours before we took the train to the airport.

Master Echo,

which hotel are you staying at in HGK?

Last year SS did have a bus-transfer to the Peninsula (for anyone, not just the SS post cruise guests). While one could have walked as the hotel was really just around the corner from the cruise-terminal we were glad we had signed up for the SS bus given our luggage as there was no taxi in sight anywhere after we claimed the luggage upon disembarkation.

So potential options (in decreasing order of cost :D) are

- check what hotel SS has picked this time and book a room there yourself

- take the SS bus to the SS hotel and grab a taxi from there to your hotel

- ask your hotel to pick you up at cruise terminal.

See you in SIN in 2 weeks!

Dear MJN,

Many thanks for your speedy reply, and your suggestions.

It is such a shame as the Ocean Terminal is far better, we have always of course disembarked here, but have not been back to Hong Kong since 2011, before they amended the old Kai Tak airport runway. This is not nearly as convenient for those staying near the airport.

I cannot understand why there are not enough taxis, particularly as there are many larger cruise ships berthing here now.

We have often booked an SS transfer, - but it is usually a lot earlier than we would wish, and rather than hump our suitcases on an off a coach, it would be preferable just to catch a cab. We are staying at the Novotel Citygate which is classed as an "airport" hotel, so an SS transfer to the airport, would still mean we would have to get to our hotel under our own steam from the airport.

We have in fact emailed the hotel, but have not yet received a reply. Your second suggestion may turn out to be the only option.

Thanks again - see you in Singapore.

Kindest regards

Master Echo
