A little help please

We are flying Delta Air from Portland (PDX) to Milan (LIN) with a 1 hour 40 minute stop over in Amsterdam (AMS). On our return flight, we are leaving Rome (FCO) on Alitailia Air to New York (JFK) and on to PDX with Delta with a 3 hour layover. MY question is when we arrive in AMS do we have to go to baggage claim to get our bags and then recheck them for our flight to LIN? Do we go through customs in AMS or LIN?

On our return flight do we get our bags in JFK and go through customs and then recheck them for our flight to PDX?

If someone could walk us through this process, step by step, it would help so very much. We do not have much experience in this and it has caused us much anxiety.

Thank you.

Outbound: Immigration in AMS, Customs in LIN

Inbound: At JFK you'll clear immigration, then baggage claim, then customs, then place your checked bags on transit belt, then security.

P.S. Vague thread titles help nobody. Someone may know your exact answer but titles such as "Question", "Info needed" or "Help" give posters no idea what your thread is about

Going to Europe:

  • you'll clear passport control (immigration) at AMS
  • bags will be checked through to LIN, no need to claim in AMS
  • you'll clear customs (goods) at LIN, but that will be basically a wave through unless you're carrying special goods, or a case of booze or or....

(note that Milan has two airports, and you're going into the smaller one, LIN/Linate, not the main one MXP/Malpensa)

returning to the USA:

  • You'll clear customs and immigration at JFK, and you'll need to collect and re-check your bags (likely while cursing at how much better the Europeans deal with this)

Remember - when you arrive at JFK, after you do immigration, collect your bags, go through customs, re-check your bags, you must do the TSA dog-and-pony show. This may be the biggest time-waster of your connection time.

And, you will be changing terminals, too. The Alitalia flight comes in at T1, and the Delta (I presume) flight departs from T4. There is no airside transfer between these terminals, so you'll have to find your own way.
