Isle of Capri

You don't need a shore excursion to see Capri (in fact, it's kind of overkill). The ferries to Capri from Naples depart from right next to the cruise ship port, and there are easy ways to get around on Capri once you are there.

If you want to give a bit more info regarding what interests you at Capri, we can help you plan a day on your own there.

Hi, my husband and I will also be visiting Naples and would love to go back to the Isle of Capri and the Blue Grotto. We last visited there more than ten years ago. Is the Blue Grotto still accessible? Do we need to book in advance? We will be there on October 17 2017. Thank you for offering to assist. Cheers, Rosemary.

You do not need to make advance reservations for the Blue Grotto. Once you take the ferry to Capri, you'll be right at the port where you can board one of the smaller vessels that take you around to the Blue Grotto. If you've been there before, you'll remember that you have to transfer outside the Grotto to a much smaller boat that can get inside.

Unfortunately entrance to the Grotto is at the mercy of the tides and the weather. If you happen to hit a bad day (somewhat more likely in mid October), then you won't be able to go.

We did a private tour from Sorrento to Capri with italytoursharing.com and I know they also run tours from Naples. We were picked up at the port and taken to Capri on a private cabin cruiser. We did get to go into the Blue Grotto; it was beautiful! Because we didn't take a ferry, we got there before the crowds. When we had all finished going inside, there we - no kidding- hundreds of people on several large ships waiting to get inside. After the Blue Grotto, we were taken to the port to visit the island itself; our captain picked us up at our agreed to time and then showed us more of the island from the water, then back to port to catch our ship with lots of time to spare. There we 10 of us on our tour and we had an amazing day!

Capri is a wonderful place to DIY, and if time allows, book a private boat tour with Gianni's.

We skipped the Blue Grotto as it was very crowded (and they charged a fee to just "see" it), but there are other grottos around the island, definitely worth visiting. I believe we went to the Green Grotto and went swimming there; our group of 6 were the only ones there.

That does sound like a wonderful tour. But folks should be advised that its not free :). That company essentially needs 1200€ to operate that tour. If you get 10 folks then the cost is a pretty reasonable 120€ per person. But if you only have 6 the cost per person doubles. With 4 persons you are talking about 300€ per person. But sure sounds like a great way to go to Capri in style :).

Hank we didn't pay nearly that much! What we did pay, it was well worth the money for the experience!! You can diy and fight the crowds for much less, of course. For us it was money and time well spent.

We just recently did Capri from Naples. The ferry does get very crowded in peak season. Buy RT tickets in the morning and get to Capri on the earliest possible ferry after your ship arrives. There are both fast and slow(er) ferry options.
