Staying in Mobile before cruise

I am taking my first cruise on Holiday from Mobile in March. I will be arriving in Mobile the night before. Any suggestions on where to stay?

We sailed out of Mobile last month and stayed at the Battleship Inn. It was a little pricey. There are several motels on I-65 near the airport and they were pretty reasonable on prices. Another option is the Raddison Admiral Simmes. It offers covered parking and a shuttle service if you drive your own vehicle. You need to make reservations early because this place fills up in a hurry.

This is the easiest port terminal that we have been to. Parking is easy and the people were friendly. You shouldn't have any problems.

P.S. I didn't have a bad meal on this trip and we stayed in Mobile for 2 days, so if you are prone to over-indulge, this is a great place.:D

Right across the bay from the ship is Daphne. On that exit is a Hampton(west side room have a full of the bay, port and Mobile, and the battleship) also a Hilton Garden suites, A really nice Comfort suites, a microtel(great rates) And a big shopping mall with some good eating places, A walmart just down the street. The next exit east of there is Spanish Fort, Alabama. There is a brand new (2months) Holiday Inn Express and a La Quinta that is about to open up and another big shopping mall. All of this is 10 min from the ship.

Thanks for the information. I'm from Ohio and this will be my first trip to Mobile as well as my first cruise. I'm trying to make as many plans ahead of time as possible so I can just relax and enjoy the trip. And I will be thrilled to eat some shrimp for you.

Best fried shrimp in the area (in my humble opinion) is on the Causeway (between Mobile and Daphne) at Ed's Seafood Shed...you can sit out on the deck, catch a gorgeous sunset over the bay, and eat until you pop!

The fried scallops, oysters, and crawfish are excellent there as well! They have lunch specials until 4 pm. http://www.edsshed.com/

The Holiday Inn Downtown just received a multi million dollar renoviation. I was there on business last week, everything is new from the top to the bottom. We were on the 12th floor with a room overlooking the port. On Thursday I watched the Holiday dock in the morning and set sail at 4:00 p.m. Felix's Fish Camp and the Original Oyster House are great restruants also, they are on Battleship Parkway overlooking the Bay. Enjoy your cruise:D we leave in 40 days....

You will be safe in Daphne and Spanish Fort Hotels. In Mobile, anything right by the interstate in Saraland (Off of I-65) or Tillmans Corner(Off of I-10) are good. Some of the hotels at Airport and I65 are ok, just use the normal guidelines and stay at a nice rather than cheaper brand. Downtown has some very nice hotels that were recently renovated. The Battlehouse is brand new, but I think it is a little pricey.

Also looking at the Ashbury. Was it a easy drive to the terminal? How far is it to Battleship Park?

It's a very easy drive from I-65 (where the Ashbury is located) to the terminal and also to Battleship Park - both are off I-10. You'll head south on I-65 and merge left onto I-10 East (towards Pensacola). The terminal exit is right before you head into the George Wallace Tunnel (I think it's the Canal Street Exit). If you continue on I-10 instead of exiting at the terminal, you will go through the George Wallace tunnel...take the first exit after the tunnel and you'll be on Battleship Parkway...the battleship is just ahead on the right...no more than 5-10 minutes from the terminal.

I was looking at Saraland. It is a little 'town' just north of Mobile. There are some major price differences. I wa a bit confused while looking at hotel reviews on other websites though...

Just another option!

Thanks,

Chuck

Another option for those looking for entertainment as well as a place to stay the night before a cruise should look at the Casino Hotels in Biloxi, MS. They are just over an hours drive from the port on I-10 and most have great seafood buffets and shows as well.

We have stayed at that exit before - and will again in September - very convenient, feels like a "straight shot" to terminal. We stay at Holida Inn Express or Quality Inn there - and eat at Wintzell's Oyster House the night before.

When we cruise in December, we'll likely just drive down that morning - traveling with extended family and harder to coordinate hotel rooms.
