nook to check email in alaska and in ports

we have a question from someone in our group on our cruise to Alaska next summer. can you use and is it safe to use nook to check email while on land portion of trip and while in ports during cruise.....anything we should know....trying to decide if they should take it

Perhaps I misunderstand the need to use Internet to check mail. Or perhaps the phone is not US based. But can't this person just use their smartphone for free to check their mail? Alaska is US which means no roaming. But I'm assuming this person has a smartphone which would make it easy.

It is also a good idea to ask a crew member because they use the free WiFi in ports to keep in touch with their families.
