Packing for Med second half of September ..advice please

Although I've looked at some climate charts it's difficult to get an idea of the weather to expect & clothes needed on a 2 week Med cruise mainly around Italy during the last 2 weeks in September.

How hot will it be in port during the day? evenings on our balcony? in the restaurants & bars? and what about sea days? Possibility of rain? etc etc

Should I take a warm jacket or just a light long sleeved top? A light waterproof & an umbrella would seem sensible, but other than that I'm all at sea!!

First off weather is weather so history means nothing and that includes where you are sailing.

Some ports though should be warm but some (Venice) can be cooler and it could be sunny, rainy, cloudy or a combination of both and it can vary by day.

I would bring a jacket with you if it is raining (waterproof with hood is ideal) and be prepared to layer with sweater or fleece or something along those lines.

Again, history means nothing and as someone who has sailed this area several times in September each time was different.

Prepare for both.

It's a great time to be sailing the Med.

Don't bring a heavy jacket. Light layering will be the best. As stated above, a waterproof/repellant wind breaker is the best and maybe one long sleeved t-shirt and a thin cardigan will be all you need for cool to cold. Then plan on light trousers and even capris will get you through the days. I usually travel in Sept/Oct and usually figure between mid-70's to 50's for the temps. Just make sure you have a good pair of walking shoes!

Layers. That's the operative word.

The weather in the Mediterranean ports in September resembles the weather in the northeast USA (New England, NY and NJ) so you can expect almost anything. On a recent trip to Venice in August we had 55 (f) degrees and overcast followed by light showers the next day. On day 3 it was sunny and warm (high 70's).

On the Costa del Sol (Spain), we had mostly bright sun and mid to high 80's.

So there is no definitive advice except be prepared for just about any weather. A lot can change over 2 weeks.

Mid-September into early October is the best time for the Mediterranean; there is a chance of a bit of rain, but likely less than in April and May. June through August is unbearably hot. Late October is still good, but getting cool; and November through March will be chilly to cold.

Agree completely. We've been in the Med. at all times of year and found exactly what navybankteacher says. Late Aug. to early Sept is likely to be hot and late Oct can be chilly.

We did Venice at Thanksgiving time one year and it was "different." Piazza San Marcos was flooded, the one restaurant we found that served turkey really served what we would call luncheon cold cuts, and the local Benneton store sold a very heavy bright orange jacket to my wife because of the very cool and wet weather. (At least she was easily spotted in a crowd. ;))

Autumn starts around Sept 21st; nights are drawing in, and there's a chance of some high winds and rain. On the whole, though the temperatures will remain in the 20s and 30s- certainly much warmer than northern Europe- but it may feel chillier on deck in an evening, on a moving ship.

We were told once by a Croatian not to consider having a holiday there until the very end of September, as the temperature is too much for Brits until then... ; the Med itself is still warm enough for swimming- we used to think that the October half term was when the sea began feeling chilly unless we were staying somewhere as far south as Tunisia.
