Port of New Orleans -- Closest Hotel(s) questions

Hi, all!

We are sailing out of the Port of New Orleans this December. I've tried a few searches here but I think maybe I can't find the right phrase to trigger what I'm looking for.

When we sail from the Port of Miami, we like to fly in a day before and stay at the Intercontinental (or in a pinch the Holiday Inn POM) -- both give a great view of the port, are safe hotels with nearby restaurants and stores, and a cab ride from them to the port is cheap ($10 or so). I'm trying to find the New Orleans equivalent of those, if that makes sense.

I've found lots of info on hotels which will let us park our car during the cruise, but we are going to fly in rather than drive -- we value more time in New Orleans over the savings from driving ourselves. It seems like maybe something I've seen called "River Watch" and "River Walk" and "River Side" on various threads may be the area we want -- can anyone give a bit more direction on that? Is that a place adjacent to the port? What other services are there? If we choose to go to the French Quarter the night before the cruise are taxis readily available? Do any hotels in that area offer airport (not cruise port) shuttle services?

Thanks for any guidance. I'm a bit lost on this one because the search engine let me down -- normally it's very helpful!

I think the Hilton is the closest to the port. The others are a short cab ride.

Sheraton, Marriott, Roosevelt.

We stayed at the Doubletree a few years ago. Great location and nice view of the river. If memory serves correct, across from the casino if you're into that. Close enough to the port and also the French Quarter.

Thanks for the input, all! Since New Orleans isn't a "port of call" for our trip (it's the departure port) I didn't even think about checking that board, but I did find some good info there. I read several pages, did a good bit of research at tripadvisor and so forth, then decided that since it was just for one night pre-cruise Priceline would be fine. It was -- I had a very reasonable offer for a 4* accepted and I think the hotel we won will be just fine.

  • 2 weeks later...

We are going in Aug and booked the Embassy Suites. It was a great deal since it includes breakfast and the mangers reception from 5:30 to 7:30, open bar and snacks :-)

From what I have read you can even walk to the port if you wanted. I can let you know when we get back but sounds like you may have found something already.

emjay, you booked a great hotel! I live less than 3 hours from New Orleans and have been there countless times and have cruised from there. The Embassy Suites is probably my favorite hotel to stay at. The manager's special is great, much more than I expected the first time I stayed there. I was pleasantly surprised. And the "free" breakfast is very good compared to other hotel free breakfasts. Enjoy and know that your hotel stay will be enjoyable as well as your cruise.

Thanks for the info. We have alway enjoyed Embassy Suites. We try to get the one in Tampa also when we cruise from there. You really can't beat it. I am sure we will be enjoying both and it now is not too far away!
