QM2 transatlantic for single?

Hi guys. I've been offered the overt unity to travel on QM2's eastbound transatlantic sailing next week. I was initially keen to go but am now slightly nervous at being a young (ish) single guy onboard.

Can anyone offer any tips\advice on what it's like onboard and if it would be enjoyable?

Looking at the dress code I'll need a new credit card for a wardrobe!

I have been on 2 transatlantic cruises on the Queen Mary 2 and a solo and loved both of them. On both cruises there were very active Friends of Dorothy/LGBT meetings, which should be a good way to meet other people. Also, there is assigned dining so you will get to meet your tablemates (I found Cunard pretty good at matching people of similar age and solos on tables).

Cunard is the last holdout for formal dining and you should prepare to wear at least a blazer and tie for formal nights (3 nights on a 7 night cruise!). But if that does not bother you too much, you should have good time.

Cunard has a typically older (my age) crowd (40s-60s) but there is a good spectrum. What I found was a lot of activities during the day--movies, trivia, spa, shows (planetarium/theater), bingo, casino, wine tastings so if you like those typically cruise-ship activities you will find a lot to do. Less outdoor sports activities, but then I was on a fall cruise so on my sailings the pools and outdoor venues were not used much due to the weather--in June is should be better.

Hope you have a great time if you decide to go.

29 here and sailed QM2 for 19 nights (including a 7 night transatlantic crossing). It was an amazing voyage and I loved every minute of it.

Yes, you'll be on the younger end of the spectrum, but don't let that be a problem. I met so many nice people of all ages. Actually, those older tended to be nicer to be around than younger passengers.

Only you can decide whether your trip will be enjoyable. You're not me, so I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But I loved the lectures, the food, the afternoon bingo, and the evening entertainment. The Friends of Dorothy meetings at 5pm in the Commodore Club each evening are also nice to go to.

Don't let the dress code freak you out. I'm sure you own a dark suit and at least a few ties? If so, you'll be fine. You don't need a tux, although I must say it was well worth getting one before sailing. Even I managed to look good in a tux :)

It looks like you'll disembark in Southampton 2 days before I embark in Hamburg. I'm jealous - a TA is the crown jewel of cruising in my opinion. The only way to do it proper is on QM2.

Do it!!! I did. Last year HAM-NYC in the grills alone. Friends of Dorothy meet in Commodore 5ish each night. Met lovely people and am still friends with a great German couple. The spa is great if you like spas, buy a week's pass!

I love the QM2

I have done it too… And, am doing it again!

One of the best experiences of my life. Amazing.

I would encourage anyone considering it, to go for it. I really would.

Celebrity also does a good job of enforcing formal attire on formal nights in the MDR definitely moreso on the non-caribbean sailings such as Transatlantics and European sailings.

They schedule formal nights as follows:

1 on 6 night and fewer sailings

2 on 7-11 night sailings

3 on 12-15 night sailings

4 on 16 or longer sailings

I've not yet sailed Cunard, but have sailed Celebrity as a solo 7 times, and always find others to hang out with and have a great time. I am hoping to do a Cunard within a year or so, maybe a B2B transatlantic and expect to find the same experience as far as meeting others.

Didn't one of the Cunard ships just add a few "solo" cabins?

Yes. The Queen Elizabeth went into service post re-fit a few weeks ago and now has a small number of solo cabins which are all ocean view. They are nice, from the pictures, all be it you can tell, in comparison to the rest of the ship that they were an "after-thought" and have been slotted in where they could… The one benefit for those who like an ocean view, is that the space was taken from one of the pubic areas, and the windows are much larger than the normal ocean view windows, so all good on that front!

I really would recommend Cunard. I had a wonderful time as a 32 year old single gay man crossing the Atlantic. The FoD meeting was nice, met some lovely guys and girls there, and also had wonderful table mates for dinner.

If you are US resident, there are usually some good deals kicking around too…

I was curious pif maybe they encroached on some former staff space to make singles cabins. Staff reductions have been a point of discussion ion multiple forums, and I always surmised if they had reduced staff, they would omnvert the staff canons to paying cabins, and making them for singles, makes it make even more sense.

I have seen a few times where Cunard waives the single supplement in the US, also Pied Piper group cruises does a few of their trips annually with some decent discounts, usually 1 east and 1 westbound, and they did the 4th of july in Boston Harbor cruise out now. You should look into them if you are looking to do another TA some day....

I'm sailing the QM2 in a few weeks w/my partner and in the spirit of the 21st century, I hope Cunard (like most other lines) stopped using the term Friends of Dorothy. We do not need these codes any longer. "LGBT" would be the most appropriate and least offensive (IMHO). Your opinions?

I don't get worked up over vernacular. I see no reason to post anywhere a meeting spot or occasion any longer, on a board, a sign, or in the printed dailies. just go to the bar or pool....
