Glammy Grammy Posted December 11, 2014 #1 Share Posted December 11, 2014 I am considering a cruise on QE next year. I've always had a balcony cabin on a higher deck but very sadly my husband has recently passed away so I will be travelling solo for the first time. There are some single cabins on deck 2, but they appear to be close to the casino and the theatre - anyone stayed in one? I'm concerned in case they will be too noisy. Next alternative is an oceanview with obstructed or unobstructed view on deck 4 I'd be grateful for any feedback. I feel quite comfortable at the thought of a solo cruise, do they have any functions/get togethers specifically for solo travellers?
Rare Scrapnana Posted December 11, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 11, 2014 (edited) Sorry to hear about your loss. Check the rates of those single staterooms carefully. I have tried a number of dummy bookings and have found the single ocean views to be the same price (and sometimes more) than paying the single supplement on a regular ocean view (which is larger). I, too, question how quiet those staterooms are being sandwiched between the Queens Room, the casino and the Royal Court Theatre. Hopefully Cunard planned for this with extra insulation. I have not seen any reports from anybody who has stayed in one but IIRC Cunard only recently started selling them (maybe just this month). There is a solo travellers get-together every sea day usually with the social hostess in attendance. They also published a meeting place on port days for solo travellers who wanted to explore together or even just share a taxi someplace. Solo travellers are usually put with other solos at dinner as well. Best wishes for your next cruise. Lanky Lad Posted December 11, 2014 #3 Share Posted December 11, 2014 Hi, so sorry to hear your news. The single cabins on QE are built in what was part of the Casino. I would be tempted to go for the obstructed view cabin.
seacruise9 Posted December 11, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 11, 2014 Hi, I am sorry for your loss. I have taken many Cunard cruises as a solo traveler and always had a wonderful time. Most recently, in November 2014, I did a transatlantic crossing as a solo traveler on the Queen Mary 2. As mentioned above, I was automatically seated in the restaurant for dinner at a table of other solo travelers who were fairly close to my age. I had wonderful tablemates who greatly added to my enjoyment of the crossing. Another good way to meet people is to dine in the restaurant for breakfast and lunch (open seating) and agree to share a table. I have also met people at afternoon tea in the Queens Room. In addition, I have met people on cruises during shore excursions. I cruised aboard the Queen Elizabeth in late 2012 as a solo traveler and greatly enjoyed the cruise. This cruise was before the single staterooms were added. I was booked in an obstructed oceanview stateroom on Deck 4. As mentioned above, the single staterooms on the Queen Elizabeth seem to be unreasonably priced on some sailings. It is possible that you may be able to book a larger double stateroom (with the single supplement) for less than a single stateroom. Chuck

Sorry, I couldn't get the two photos of the new single cabins on the Queen Elizabeth (taken by a friend) to appear here on the thread, but here are the links to them: Sorry again, my fault I'm sure :o
fantasy51 Posted December 18, 2014 #7 Share Posted December 18, 2014 I enjoyed the photos Pepper. What impressed me is the size of the windows. I'm used to obstructed cabins on deck 1 with smallish windows such that you can only see out when you stand up. It doesn't look to me as though these rooms have an armchair (and definitely not a couch) so I wouldn't be interested. I always like to rest for a while in the armchair, to gather my energy so I can dance the night away.
