Hotel near Melbourne Port

We will be arriving from Canada on Jan 23, 2015 for a 5 day cruise on Jan 24th from Melbourne to Tasmania. This is our first time to Australia and so I need some advice on where to stay in Melbourne the night before our cruise (we arrive 10:30 am), perhaps mid-way from the airport to the port.

I would book fairly quickly as the Australian Open Tennis is on then and most of the hotels will be booked out or close to it.

As others have said the tennis will cause some issues. The port is only 15 minutes from the cbd and there is nothing recommended between the airport and cbd so aim aim for Central Melbourne - there are a number of smaller apartment style hotels throughout the city - look for Quest or Oaks chain - wotif.com feature these. Best location would be somewhere near the river - Southbank area, Flinders or Collins streets ok.

I agree but if those locations are booked out try around St Kilda, still fairly close to the port but further from the tennis arena.
