Has anyone done this tour? They offer a weeklong ticket that includes three walking tours for free. Would it just be better to use the streetcars and DIY the walking tours?

NOLA is not a city I would see by double decker bus. The sights in the French Quarter are all easily accessible by foot. The other sites can be reached with either a short cab ride or by the street car.

Because of it's size, Decatur is the only street in the FQ that this bus can travel on.

The National Park Service offers free walking tours of the French Quarter, and you can download self-guided tours from a number of sources.

We just did this and actually enjoyed it for the most part. We had an excellent guide our first portion. He made it very enjoyable and shared a wealth of knowledge about NOLA we would not have learned otherwise.

I agree, walking tours are the way to go, not a "bus" that is VERY limited. If you go to your library, Fodor's And Frommers books have walking tours listed.

They discontinued the French Quarter walking tours several years ago. They now bring you up on the levee and inform on that, still worthwhile, though. You do have to be in line for the tickets at 9am. They do offer a print out French Quarter walking tour, to do on your own.

If you like scavenger type walking tours, strayboots dot com does offer tours that are fun. We took our granddaughters on the garden district tour over the summer, they thoroughly enjoyed it.

We are going to do the City Sightseeing Double Decker Bus after our cruise in December. I just found a $5.00 off coupon on the New Orleans CVB website

Since the last comment was nearly three years ago, I wanted to know if anyone had any updated information about the Hop On Hop Off Bus. If you rode it, did you like it. I don't mind doing both the bus and my own walking around.

We used the Hop on hop off in March pre cruise. It was our first visit and it helped with familiarizing with the layout and what to see. There are a few stops that also provide for guided walking tours. We loved the time and used the bus as transportation as well as for the tour. Able to take photos from the upper deck too. Tour guides vary widely, but all were well informed. Streetcars are great also and quite affordable. Depends how busy the town is when you're there as to how long it might be to get a seat on the streetcars. Next trip in July we have booked a hotel that has a stop within a block of the Hop on and plan to use it for three days. The New Orleans transportation authority website was also helpful as you could search routes by location name and it offers directions by: car, streetcar, foot and bus. Found it helpful. It was our favorite pre cruise port. Bought Fttf with Carnival and honestly would have been fine exploring the city some more and embarking a little later. However, wife and two daughters had other ideas. Enjoy.

Thanks for so much information. We will be on the Carnival Dream July 9th next year. This will be our second time to NOLA but the last time was before hurricane Katrina.
