Our first cruise with Oceania is on the Venice to Barcelona cruise at the end of the month. We embark on the 28th and then overnight in Venice leaving on the 29th. We have cruised once before with celebrity but left on the same day we embarked . We will be flying on the day and assuming our flight is on time should be at the port by one. We want to see as much of Venice as possible are we able once we have checked in ,got rid of our luggage and got our sea pass cards get straight off the boat again and spend the day/ evening in Venice only returning later in the evening or can you only get off after a certain time?

We are from the uk so it is only a short flight so we won't be jet lagged and want to make the most of the time in Venice.

Also how does muster drill work as we are sailing at 11 pm the day after embarkation

it would be really good if some experienced cruiser has the answers

You may get on and off of the ship as you please while she is docked in Venice, and although there may be a muster drill on the 28th, because a large portion of your busy shipmates won't arrive until the day that you actually sail, there will certainly be a second one on the 29th (it's usually during or very soon after your actual sail-away, but they may do it during that last hour in port in light of the late departure).

You are required to be on the ship "for good" at least one hour before sailing time on the 29th. (That is in Section 8 of the Terms and Conditions at the back of your Cruise Vacation Guide :D )

You didn't state what type of cabin you are in. Bear in mind that if one is in a lower verandah, their cabin may not be ready until 15:00 or later. So you may not be able to just drop your bags (other than checked suitcases) and leave until your room opens up. ;)

Otherwise, you can carry your carry ons around with you while sightseeing!

Our experience this past week was slightly different than that related by JimandStan and suggests that there is more than one set of circumstances that dictate the actual events in different ports or with different ships.

Our ship, the Riviera docked in Monte Carlo on the 25th July for an 'overnight' before disembarking passengers on the morning 26th. New passengers (for the new cruise) embarked from 11 am 26th July. My wife and I checked in, got our sea cards etc.,had lunch in the Terrace Café, visited our cabin and then went ashore about 1.30 pm to explore Monte Carlo. A notice in our cabin and at exit from the ship directed that we return to the ship for a Mandatory Guest Lifeboat Drill at 5.15 pm......even though we were not scheduled to sail until 11 pm that evening. The Muster drill was over by 5.45 pm when we returned to shore to continue our exploring. I believe 'all aboard' was 10 pm.....we were back early at 9 pm.

Hope this helps.

we have done several late sailings for different ports & some overnights

the muster drill is usually 5:15 pm on the day you sail

If you miss it they will have a make up drill for those that were not onboard

many people like to make the most of their time in port

Hi Adele,

We are on same sailing on 8.35 from Heathgrow so we too will be looking to explore on first day.

Will have to see regarding muster but as we are PH we may be able to drop hand baggage in cabin.

See you there!!!!

PS freudian slip re Heathrow

We had an overnight flight, so landed in the morning, were able to check in and leave all our bags by 11.

Went sightseeing and missed the muster drill; when we returned to the cabin, there was a sheet of paper with written instructions about mustering, but no make-up muster drill was held on the day we sailed.
