chillami Posted March 4, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 4, 2015 We are taking a family cruise in July. Carnival from Seattle to Alaska. Apparently there is a train ride that everyone wants to go on. It's a train ride up but a bus ride back and since we'd be entering Canada, we need a passport? Would a passport card work just as well? Thanks :-)
BCCRUSINGCOUPLE Posted March 4, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 4, 2015 You would need a passport. Please tell me about the passport card have never heard of it.

Lerin Posted March 4, 2015 #5 Share Posted March 4, 2015 From US Gov site United States citizens can use an official passport card to enter Canada if driving across the border or entering from the sea. The U.S. government began issuing passport cards in 2008. The cards cost less than the books, but can't be used for air travel. They resemble a driver's license in shape and thickness. The cards use the same application process as the passport book, and don't expire for 10 years. Citizens can have both passport books and cards; they can even apply for them simultaneously." Doesn't specify train, though it seems it would be alright. I'd call the company to double check
BCCRUSINGCOUPLE Posted March 4, 2015 #6 Share Posted March 4, 2015 I wound to be safe. Are you looking at the train that goes from Vancouver to Seattle.
Illyria Posted March 4, 2015 #7 Share Posted March 4, 2015 I wound to be safe. Are you looking at the train that goes from Vancouver to Seattle. They are probably talking about the train in Skagway, Alaska (it enters Canada). http://wpyr.com/ And yes, passport card is acceptable in this case. SadieN Posted March 4, 2015 #8 Share Posted March 4, 2015 Aren't there two tours? One that crosses into Canada and on that doesn't? Might want to ask on the Alaska board.

The shorter one is up and back on the train and the longer one that goes into Canada is up by train and then return by bus. We took the train both ways - absolutely incredible scenery. Rare Essiesmom Posted March 4, 2015 #10 Share Posted March 4, 2015 The shorter one does go into Canada, reverses the engines, and comes back down. Passengers on that train do not get off in Canada, so do not need passports. EM
