Has anyone been lately? Was it worth the money? Easy to get to? A safe neighborhood? Good eating and drinking early?

Thanks!!!

Yes

Yes (especially as the tickets were free). It's a theatre?

Yes - A few minutes walk from Waterloo tube station or 15-20 from Covent Garden area

Yes

Not by the theatre, but the Southbank centre, with all it offers is a few minutes walk away.

What's playing? I go for the show, not the theatre.

Good eating and drinking early?
  • Waterloo Bar and Kitchen, on Waterloo Road around the corner from the front door of the theatre (in the next door building to the theatre - it's always full of people doing pre-theatre meals as it's 60 seconds walk to the theatre's front door).
  • Masters Superfish, a few dozen yards further along Waterloo Road, for good fish and chips.
  • On The Cut, the Anchor and Hope, which is one of the better gastropubs in London.
  • Meson Don Felipe for good quality tapas.
  • Chain places include Byron for good burgers and Tas for Turkish, both on The Cut; and Wahaca on Waterloo Road opposite the front door of the theatre, for Mexican street food.

You definitely do not need to go as far as the South Bank.

As for what 's on, Google Old Vic Theatre. They have a user friendly website and should be listing their New season very soon, tickets easily bought online.

Their productions are usually very well done and greatly enjoyable by this serious theatre lover.

The Wellington Pub/Hotel has pretty decent pub food too; not to mention Fullers on tap . We actually stayed at the Wellington and went to the old vic last May, enjoyed both thoroughly.

London is full of fine theatres. I'm not sure why you particularly want to go to the Old Vic. Theatre tickets are expensive, so wouldn't it be better to reserach what's on at all the theatres and go to the one with the performance that most appeals to you? i can't think of any London theatre in an 'unsafe' area and all of them will have eating places within easy reach.

Well, I can now answer this positively.

Earlier this week, we went to see Kevin Spacey in Clarence Darrow. It's not the first run of him in this one-man show, but it was good to have it back so that we got a chance to see him do it before he leaves London.

I wouldn't have been able to pay the current market rate for tickets of the kind that we had (which appears to be in the region of £1,000 per ticket), but we were very satisfied with the value that we got for the face value that we paid for our tickets.

Afterwards, we popped over to Meson Don Felipe on spec, and were lucky that they had exactly one empty table for two.
