Walking to Pier 88 in NYC

We're staying at Ink48 Hotel which is a block away from the pier. Looking at Google Maps, everything appears to be gated for anyone arriving on foot. Do they open those gates when a ship is embarking/disembarking? Or do we have to walk all the way to the end of the piers on 54th St. to enter? Sorry if this is a stupid question, never sailed from NYC before. Thanks for your assistance!

Never seen any gates..... you can walk into the terminal when a ship is in.

There is a crosswalk at the W. 50th St. traffic light that leads right to the terminal entrance.

You are correct there are gates but they are never closed when ships are going to be in port.

A lot of people crew and passengers cross the street all the time and have no issue accessing any of the piers.

I used to walk from the subway on the now long gone CTN's.
