Travel Electric Blanket?

In which case most brainless people will bring along an 18 gauge extension cord and run it 25 feet to power up their prohibited devices which already draw too much current without taking into account the voltage drop over an undersized conductor......

Actually, heating blankets and heat pads use only about 100 watts when set on high. This equates to less than 1 amp, so your 18 ga extension cord would handle this just fine. Now, the wife's 1500 watt hair dryer would draw more than 12 amps, and this could be a problem when using that cord, but it is allowed by the cruise lines. The reason most items that have heating elements are prohibited is not excessive current draw, it is the fact that the "auto-off" switches tend to fail, and the device will continue to heat until combustion occurs.

Why not get your mom a lightweight down blanket, which can be compressed to a very small size for packing? Or a wool/cashmere blend large throw? You can easily find these on line.

Try garnethill.com among others.

It's not that she is necessarily cold, it's that she needs the heat of the blanket to help ease her pain. But thank you for the suggestion.

Another option would be the Thermacare heat wraps and pads. They will stay warm for up to 8 hours and are made to fit back, hips, knees, shoulders, etc. They work great for me and you aren't tied down with the cord.
Excellent suggestion. This is much better on a cruise ship than an electric blanket.

My mother is in her 90s and travels a lot. If her joints get cold, she has pain the next day - so it sounds like this is the same problem your mother has.

Mom carries a small lambswool pad - about 2'x3' - and slips it underneath the bedsheet beneath her hips and knees. She finds this makes a world of difference. She also has knitted leg warmers that she pulls over her knees. Again, this has helped a lot.

Those thermal wraps can be dangerous, especially for those with delicate skin. Be sure to read the instructions carefully. Mom uses Bengay instead of the pads because she has been warned about burns.

An old favourite is still a hot water bottle if she winds up getting chilled.
